Tex, if you could be arsed, that'd be super! The magnitude of the wave, and the resultant surge was phenomenal. I can't remember if it was 'Trinity and Beyond' or one of the other Lookout Mountain docos where they discussed clambering up palm trees to try and escape the surge!

That was the lookout mountain doco gianttomato. Three waves, the third swamping the whole island in 5-6 feet of water. I think that may have been a smaller detonation than the one you referred to (Ivy Mike shot?)

That movie is phenomenal - when you consider that the US performed somewhere in the realm of 300 atmospheric tests, it really is astounding to think of the lack of regard for the environment that these people must have had... Not to mention the tests performed in the ocean!

I'll get around to doing the vid later, I'm feeling a tad lethargic at the moment. Panadeine Forte will do that though, I guess. :p

There are some complete crackpots (IMHO) on that other forum! It's hilarious! Conspiracy theories and talks of the Book of Revelations abound! :D

Thanks Tex, it was a while ago when I saw it, and the shot may well have been smaller than 20MT. The other bit I found mind blowing was the first Chinese shot, with the foot soldiers and cavalry running around in mock battle with that huge mushroom cloud billowing up in the distance. The battle scene looked quasi-medieval, but the mushroom cloud reminded you this was a scene from the 20th century. Very trippy.
The disregard for the environment was incredible, but the USA's disregard for it's own citizens was beyond description. The Nevada shots were conducted near small townships and the locals were encouraged to come spectate. No fallout protection was provided for anyone.
I can't imaginbe the USSR or China treated its citizens any better.

thanks GSRman, but i know how diesel subs operate, coming up to periscope depth to get air into the diesels, but i wasn't sure if the collins class were a straight diesel *shudders and thinks of 1942* or batteries also.

and no. let's not buy russian submarines. if we wanted foreign subs we could always go for 688 or 726's...although we couldn't afford them probably, and 726's are a big recon and surveillance sub :D

Ok. Ripped some vids for the enjoyment (astonishment?) of you all.

This is vid ripped from the "Trinity and Beyond" DVD, which, as mentioned, has "The Atomic Filmmakers" with it as well. As you will see, the footage in this clip is taken from both of them.

The file size is approx. 12mb. Watch it in FULL SCREEN. You will need DivX 5.02 (I think).

As you will see, the first shot is Crossroads Baker, not Ivy-Mike as I'd thought in my previous post (Baker was the name of the shot, Crossroads the codename of the whole operation). It was a 21 kiloton yield weapon, about the same as the weapon dropped on Nagasaki, and was detonated under water (about 80ft depth if I recall correctly).

I've managed to do some research and have found that the second bit of footage which shows the waves gianttomato was referring to is footage taken from Operation Hardtack, shot Wahoo. It was a 9 kiloton yield (only a baby, substantially smaller than the weapon dropped on Hiroshima), again an underwater detonation.

              CLICK ME.

Tex thats amazingly stunning. We are the masters of our own demise with those weapons.

Bozz, that's not even the most spectacular stuff... At some point I may get a few other snippets together for everyone's interest. It's astounding the power these weapons have. Perhaps a clip on the Tsar Bomba might be in order, seeing as it has played a part in this thread?

I will see what other awe-inspiring stuff is on there.

Hehehehe......Tsar Bomba. That was one big bomb, but completely impractical.
The doco is great....it shows some of the bombs prior to being detonated. The first US hydrogen bombs actually couldn't be deployed by plane - they were actually built on site. With improvements in design, they became small enough to be deployable by plane. It then became obvious that long range plane deployment was unfeasable during warfare, and that single large bombs would actually yield less damage than multiple smaller bombs. This then led to the development of ICBMs, and multiple warhead missiles.
The development of the hydrogen bomb was also fascinating. The Russians and the Seppos were in a cold war fuelled 'race' to build the first H-bomb. The Russians were uncertain as to how to stabilise the fusible hydrogen isotopes (deuterium and tritium). The 'secret' was actually released by the press with the title "Sky glows blood red..." with the news of the detonation of the American H-bomb shot. Te red color is the charcteristic emission of highly ionized lithium....the isotopes had been combined with lithium to form lithium deuteride and tritide. The Russians had their bomb shortly after.

Hehe, it's certainly fascinating stuff! Are there any other highlights you care to see?

For anyone else interested in the DVD it can be purchased from ABC stores for about $39.95.
