The sun can destroy comets. It's dependent on a range of things, like orbit and speed of comet and comet composition.
Comets are probably like a muddy, rocky snowball, except the 'snow' is mostly frozen methane and ammonia. In deep space this 'ice' is well and truly frozen, and as it approaches the sun, it heats and evaporates. This leads to the formation of a tail. (Comets have 2 tails, a dust tail and a gas tail - the dust tail trails behind the comet as it travels thru space, whilst the gas tail radiates away from the sun. The gases are highly ionized, so they follow the magnetic field of the sun. .See this link about comet tails and a nice pic of Comet Hale Bopp from 1997 showing both tails. )
If a pocket of gas forms within the body of the comet, this may eventually explode, leading to the disintegration of the comet, or successive trips past the sun may lead to evaporation of all the frozen gas, so there is no more 'glue' to keep the rocky bits of the comet together.
Also if a comet approaches the sun closely, it may be accelerated to a very high speed such that it breaks up

My take on this is that there are comets and asteroids. Some gas and some do not, there is a whole zoo of things flying around out there. But this one is pretty big, and it keeps coming back.
It passed within the orbit of little Mercury, so its orbit must have been influenced in some way, if only slightly. The thing that worries me most though is the complete news blackout. If there were pictures and articles in the media I would be a lot happier. Why are they hiding this if it is totally harmless?
Websites keep going down, and strange things are happening. I tried to access the NASA site this morning and got a could not find server message. WTF is going on.
MANY astromy boards, where people/scientists have been discussion this have been hacked/disapeared. The more I look, the worse it looks. NASA refuse to tell anybody the true orbit of the comet after it was hit by the solar flare.
Five days after the solar fare, (which is about the time it takes to affect earth), all the snow fell in America, and Jeruselem etc. Could this be the start of the ice age!

I also subscribe to a serious financial Forum. The comet was mentioned by briefly three other people and they have not been seen since. I made one little post on the same subject and was immediately banned. People are running very scared on this, if it has no substance why all the supression?
Warpspeed, there are 2 types of comets, periodic and non periodic. The best known periodic comet is Halley's comet, with a period of 76 years. Non periodic comets by definition are interspace wanderers. They probably drop in from the Oort cloud, make themselves visible and disappear never to be seen again.
I wouldn't get too stressed about the lack of information on comets. The media generally don't find comets exciting unless they are highly visible and spectacular. Astronomy is about as cool as iced tea and Vovos - no one cares for it.
Comets thru the ages have been surrounded by mysticism. They have been regarded as harbingers of doom for eons. Recent history hasn't helped....you only have to look at the Hale Bopp freakazoids that killed themselves a few years back. This recent talk is nothing more than the same speculative rubbish. I wouldn't put it past some uber geek computer hackers meddling with sites just for fun.
Computer hackers = amateur astronomers = uber geek.

No its still there. what NASA did was shut down the SOHO realtime website and substitute pictures that were taken exactly one year ago. The star fields are identical at twelve month intervals. Many people were fooled by this ruse, but not for long.
It only looked as though it vanished after the solar flare hit. Now it is outside the angle of view of the SOHO observatory, so we are back with real time images. But there is no longer anything to see.
Ah yes, but huge doesn't equal bright, or easily visible. Few people want to get up at 5 am to see a pissy faint little comet tail. The tails are incredibly faint....most nice pics of comets are actually time exposures on gas treated film.
Remember the disappointment that surrounded Halley's Comet in 1986? Most people weren't particularly impressed and this lingers. The best viewing was one month earlier at 3-4 am. I was the only idiot that got their telescope out to have a sticky beak - my parents thought I was nuts.

People that claim to have seen it say it is about half the diameter of the suns disc, and almost as bright. That is pretty big and pretty bright. I tried to look through a double thickness of number five welding goggles yesterday. I could see the suns disc, but nothing else. It may have been behind the sun, but I will try again now.
I can see the suns disc clearly through light cloud, but nothing else.
Sonuds very fishy to me if it was nothing to worry about or boring as someone said why would all these sites stuffing up and people banned for mentioning stuff. Unless there is something more to the comet. Thats my take on things.
Is NASA the only place that know the location of the comet now? Surley there are other astronmers that would have some idea where it is.
Its huge. Clearly visible from Earth, but no news about it.
Is that visible from naked eye in Australia or do you have to have a telescopre and situated in another part of the world.
The brightest this comet has been is magnitude 5. It is only visible from the Northern Hemisphere. The faintest object visible with the naked eye in the city is about mag 4. No wonder there is very little info about it here in Australia.

Matt --followed your directions on the orbit sim-not sure what i´m seeing it´s late,,more clues for the cluless?,
...talk about syncronicity, i was just messing with the same orbit sim , 2003 feb 19 ...when neat crosses our orbital plain(any gravitational effect must be at some sort of peak here?) -earth, venus, mercury ,neat and the sun form a cosy crucifix cross shape ....even jupiter and neptune line up almost through the vertical line of the crucifix...ok so just n observashun ,, some one probabbllly allready noticed it..and calculated any forseeable effects
cheers for the efforts , this show is top
5 days later (the time it takes to affect earth, we had mass snowstorms etc.
jimmy : I never saw it, but from all reports you could see it with a naked eye? Feel free to correct me if im wrong ppl.
