This site shows the comet is now actually observable from the Southern Hemisphere, but it's current magnitude is 6.5. The faintest thing the eyes can see in absolutely perfect conditions is mag 6. According to another site, it was visible to the naked eye with a mag around 2, but that was in the Northern Hemisphere.

Guys, unless you have a telescope, you're shit out of luck if you want to see it.

Another significant piece of information is a set of images that showed what looked like an eye to the right of the comet just before the comet was apparently struck by a solar flare (image time-dated 2003/02/18 08:54). For those familiar with the Great Seal of the US (see reverse of one dollar bill), this was strikingly familiar with the Eye of Horus signifying Providence is watching over human affairs. There are three explanations for this mysterious eye. One the eye is just a fortuitous natural event captured on camera. Two, the eye was contrived by sympathetic NASA officials wanting to communicate that they are helping get information out. Or three, some 'external' intervention from a 'non-human' agency or intelligence has indeed occurred. Given that a significant number of individuals, groups, and organizations have been waiting for a cosmic event to signify 'divine intervention' in human affairs, then arguably, Comet Neat and the eye signifies that this has indeed occurred. If either of the latter two explanations is accurate, NASA may be expected to continue encountering difficulty in keeping news of comet NEAT's interaction with the sun from becoming public knowledge.

That gulufuture site is quite amusing... Apparently the collapse of the Twin Towers, the Space Shuttle Columbia disaster, and the unseasonal weather in the US at the moment are the result of an unknown party utilising scalar weaponry!

And that is just crap IMLO. I just had another look through a space book I have(has some amazing Hubble photo's) and the distance between Earth and the moon is 239,000 miles(384,400kms)....so if this is really the size of it....ANYONE woulda seen it by now if what I've read of it's path is true. This means that if it comes as close as it's supposed to....we could quite possibly be saying bye bye to the Moon.

Also, I cant remember what the actual diameter of the Earth is...but the sun is 106 times the width of the earth. It is also over 1 million times the size of Earth. Someone else also mentioned something about it doing damage or the like to the sun...well I dont think the comet would even make it through the Sun's corona - it's millions of degrees hotter than the sun(which at the core is about 15 million degree's celcius) and extends millions of kilometers from the sun's surface.

Thats what we need to to save ourselves.....we need our own personal corona. As I was just reading a bit more on the corona of the sun, the gasses that escape the corona travel at up to 3 million kph....plenty enuff to decimate anything that ever came close enuff. Time to start up the PF sponsored "Project Corona" eh? And no....I dont mean Toyota's :p

Here is a Japanese comet chaser site that has quite a few NICE analyses of brightness, and also has a nice star map showing where you might see the comet. Going by that, if you know exactly where to look and using binoculars, you might just see it if you are in the bush.

It looks like the comet has survived its sungrazing episode, and is not going to come and hit us. The doomsday folk got it wrong this time. :p

PS: those numbers are right apart from the comet head diameter. This diameter might correspond to the gas cloud around the actual comet nucleus. Also remember, the comet is significantly fainter than the sun and being only ~9 million miles (0.1 AU) from its surface, it requires extremely sophisticated technology to visualise it. As the comet recedes from the sun, its size will also decrease.

I does not have to hit us, or come anywhere near earth to create some huge problems. If it passes in front of the earth orbit, it will accelerate earths motion, sort of give us a bit of a tow behind it.

If it passes astern of us it might slow down our orbit slightly. Any change in orbital speed places us either in a higher or lower orbit around the sun.

A change in distance from the sun is going to effect climate quite a lot. We may not see the blistering temperatures of Venus, or the icy hell of Mars, but try to imagine if daily temperatures were only +40C or -40C from what we have now.
