Tony, whilst what you say is in principle is correct, I don't think the effects would be as grave as you make them out to be. Comet nuclei are tiny, no more than 5-10 km in diameter and are mostly made of frozen methane and ammonia. If this one were to come close to the earth, the effect on earth's orbit would be negligible.Originally posted by Warpspeed
I does not have to hit us, or come anywhere near earth to create some huge problems. If it passes in front of the earth orbit, it will accelerate earths motion, sort of give us a bit of a tow behind it.
If it passes astern of us it might slow down our orbit slightly. Any change in orbital speed places us either in a higher or lower orbit around the sun.
A change in distance from the sun is going to effect climate quite a lot. We may not see the blistering temperatures of Venus, or the icy hell of Mars, but try to imagine if daily temperatures were only +40C or -40C from what we have now.
Some pages back, I think I posted the relative difference in mass of a 2 km asteroid and the earth. Someone else commented it was a bit like a 1 gm pebble hitting a 100 ton rock.Proudly presenting the new foot long chocolate Subway.

Even if it didnt have any effect on the Orbit, it would still kill everybody, no?'95 Nissan 180SXOriginally posted by CussCussa hub doesnt ask who the fuck tremolo is, it just sends it to everyone hoping one of them is tremolo

In 1910, the earth actually passed thru Halley's Comet's tail (about 10 million km long). The transit was otherwise unremarkable.
Earth's Van Allen belts protect us from ionized particles, and the atmosphere protects us from the dust.Proudly presenting the new foot long chocolate Subway.

Alleged NASA Cover-up of Menacing 'NEAT' Comet Threat is Pure Bunk, Experts Say

I spose this is all part of the conspiracy

True, if its only 10Km of dirty snowball.
But the scientists that calculated the original mass and orbit, and accurately predicted the 2003 appearance date, say it has 1.8 times the mass of Jupiter.
It is I believe a lot smaller, but Jupiter is a gas giant. This thing is a lot more solid. The gravitational effect of something like that would be pretty fearsome, even at a good distance. I do not know if it is a classic brown dwarf, or if it is just brown in colour.
The historical records from antiquity describe it as a dark reddy brown colour, probably not a good reflector of light at a distance.
Prophecies say it will approach unseen out of the suns glare, and will be visible during daylight hours to absolutely everyone on earth, and be considerably larger than the disk of the full moon. There is a lot more, but it is religious and off topic.
I do not place a great deal of trust in prophecies, but so far everything has happend exactly according to the script. Arrival is supposed to be mid, to end of May (2003).Tony

Tony are you talking about Comet NEAT V1 or something else?
If so, this comet is already well away from the sun, and all the conspiracy theory guys can breathe a sigh of relief. It's closest approach to the sun was around Feb 20, and as shown in the picture I posted above, is heading out of the solar system in a direction almost perpendicular to the ecliptic. Not a snowball's chance in hell of it hitting the earth (pardon the pun).
The estimates of size and mass are questionable. I saw above there was some suggestion it was nearly 400000 miles in diameter. The gas cloud surrounding the nucleus may well be that diameter (particularly if that dirty snowball is only 9 million miles from the sun), but the nucleus will still only be 10 or so km. The tails although being long are incredibly tenuous structures.Proudly presenting the new foot long chocolate Subway.

So does the bible say anything about this. I dont want a detailed massive post just wondering if its mentioned or not. If the comet is 1.8 times the size of Jupiter it is noticably bigger than other comets. Effect on the earth orbit is more about the mass of the commet. It's very big if its made of iron or something that could have a effect on the Earth but if it made of other substances gas and ice it may not have as much mass. Does anyone know for sure what it made of. I know there would be ice gas ect because of the tail but what would it's main property be because its alot bigger than other commets that pass near us.

Read that again wolfy and you will notice somethin"The Astronomical Unit is the average distance between the Sun and Earth. Its value is 149,597,870 km (about 93 million miles)."
If the distance were less than 1million kms, we'd be fried by the corona that you have said extends millions of kms from the sun's core.
And no dont worry about a helmet AJC, just go and buy some piss....we're gonna be fine
It wont mess with our orbit or anything either as Warp said AFAIK, as I've seen it's projected orbit and it passed behind us and comes no closer than about 120 million kilometers.
According to the orbit I've seen it's also already on it's way out of our system(as gianttomato said) at a mere 3 million kilometers a day! :worship:

If its heading away almost vertical to the ecliptic then there should be no problem at all. But why the continued silence in the media ?
There has been so much speculation, and disinformation, who really knows what all this is about. It is a bit like when NASA tried to cover up the face on Mars. They botched the whole thing terribly, and ended up looking very foolish indeed. I believe we are seeing another botched NASA cover up again here.
I will remain suspicious until I see NASA officially release some statement that a large comet has passed the sun and is heading off at rightangles to its original course, off into deep space.
They MUST now do this, to end all the speculation. If they remain silent, as I expect, then it might get even more interesting in a couple of months time.Tony
