oh, and if you have never heard of a VW motor doing 11's then you musta been born last week, because people (particuarly the yanks) have been using stock based flat four design motors, and even stock case vw motors to power VW's into 12's, 11's, 10's, 9's and 8's since the '70's. (And are still doing so).
I went to the Engine Weights FYI on the WWW and it reckoned a VW aircooled engine weight 200LBs, the Rover is 318Lbs therefore a 100Lbs or so difference.

And my reference to 45kg's not doing 11's was that I kinda figured you'd need to do a fair bit of adding/changing to get the engine to push out enough power to push a VW into the 11s. However I suspect the cars are put on a major diet reducing the need for that much power.

a stock type 1 beetle engine weighs about 90-100 kg with all accesories with oil in it.

Also placing the engine in the front of a car which was designed to have a rear engine means u have to pretty much reset all the suspension and start over.

my point is that most of the rover v8's weight would be much higher than the flat 4's and would influence handling as well.

I have actually ridden in the V-Force 2.3L Turbo Beetle. Its capable of about 11sec 1/4 miles on street tires in street trim (albeit a stripped interior, weighs about ~800kg, stock late beetles weigh about 840 or so. early beetles are about 740kg).

It utilises a new engine case, programmable EFI, water to air IC, plumb back BOV, 911 style cooling shroud, dont know what turbo, but its running about 9-15psi atm.

This thing absolutely flies. It also handles like a go kart, its the fastest thing i've ever had the pleasure of riding in. It drives great off boost as well.

And as for beetle engines sounding crap, i think you have only heard the rattly whistling ones. That sound is made by the cheap ass brazilian tail pipes, the perforated tubes inside them break from their cheap spot welds and reverberate creating the whistling sound. I don't mind it, but when you use german tailpipes on a stock engine it sounds nice.

The turbo beetle sounds absolutely awesome, its a mixture between the deep throbbyness of a Subie flat 4 and the raw metallic noise of the aircooled porsche flat six.

Anyway there is nothing wrong with putting a v8 in one, its just not what i would do.

there's more fun in telling someone u blew 'em away with a hot beetle motor than a v8

OK, that's quite a bit different from the usual painful noises emmited by Beatles.
Arguing with an engineer is a lot like wrestling in the mud with a pig. After a few hours, you realise that he likes it

Agreed the Rover V8 in the front would mess up the handling in
            a VW!

And not wanting to compare cars (and I've not driven mine),
the MG weighs about 850Kg wet, and with 470+kw, its should
go ok. All the weights are between the wheels and the engine
is ultra low. It will have slighltly higher COG than a beatle engine,
            but still pretty good.

And yeah the VW in the video does sound less annoying.

I had a run in the sleeper Manx I posted before and did a 13.5@106 mph babying it off the line and with a slipping clutch. But hell it was fun!!!:D Next time we are out it will have a new clutch and new gearbox. The poor old 1961 standard VW gearbox has seen it fair share of a thrashing. I can't believe it's lasted this long.:p :D.

I don't actually mind the sound of the Rex...they sound a little
like a V8 which is my favourite noise (V12s are also nice). But for a bug it does sound good (upgraded after a couple of listens).

I like the sound of this :-)

yeah the stock beetle box can handle up to about 150HP before it explodes or whatever... the most a stock engine put out is about 50HP.

yeah that v8 sounds shweeeet, sort of wants u to rev it more

that recording on the mpeg i posted is pretty bad sound wise, i like the overun sound, bit like a wrx but more raw and metallic.

I do like v8's but there just are a lot of cars that sound like that, whereas a flat 4 is very distinct. Its easy to tell apart a wrx and a vee dub

dont mistake me for some sort of VW enthusiest I may own one but i dont have a problem with using an angle grinder on it or jumping on the roof when it pisses me off
