If you haven't seen it already, what about the cream car in this thread, the Mazda 1800(S)? You get Italian styling with Japanese build quality & virtually rotary levels of street-cred. Plus it surely wouldn't be that hard to rotarise at a later date, if that grabs your bag.
Dacs200;s 1500 wagon always impresses - you sometimes see it on logan road.
