I wouldn't buy magazines for tech tips- but I don't believe everything off forums. I also think zoom used to be quite informative, but yeah, I agree, its gone to shit. Ah well. In fact since the technical component of magazines have plummeted so far, the only one I actually buy on a regular basis is speed-I know the tech stuff will be crap, but compared to other magazines out there, its an aesthetic masterpiece, good layouts, nice big glossy pages and good photos-and, like it or not, some cool cars.
But I mean, on the net (not just forums), its basically instant, it can be specific to your answer, or somewhat fatser than a reply once a month, the advertising that needs to be waded through is so much smaller, and if the info is out there, you will eventually find it, whereas its only selected articles of mass interest that get into the print mags-and its CHEAP- 40c a go, not $8-9.00.
    cheers,
    floody
I've seen things you people wouldn't believe, and from this side only! The flight of a half-man, half-bird. Dinosaurs nuzzling their young in pastures where strip-malls should be. Cookies on dowels. All those moments lost in time; gone like eggs off a hooker's stomach. Time to die.

Totally agree, you can usually gain information on a particular car way before it's in a mag.

But I must say, some of the no-brainer forums are a brilliant source of entertainment, just enter a Scrote forum, bag them out, sit back and watch the fireworks. Very entertaining for a Friday afternoon:D

This seems a little ironic when you kind of think about it.

The virus is not wanting to buy the mag when we can get it for free to read over the net.

        VIRUS: (as per dictionary.com)

        1
Any of various simple submicroscopic parasites of plants, animals, and bacteria that often cause disease and that consist essentially of a core of RNA or DNA surrounded by a protein coat. Unable to replicate without a host cell, viruses are typically not considered living organisms.
A disease caused by a virus.

        2
Something that poisons one's soul or mind: the pernicious virus of racism.

        3
        Computer Science. A computer virus.

Meaning 1 is us. Welcome to the world you submicroscopic parasites! Nice to know you and be one of you!

Sorry, what was that? I was looking into your eyes. :p

I'd have to stick up for the "good" internet forums and Zoom a bit. I think we can all agree that his comments were pretty squarely aimed elsewhere. (read FFF) Apart from the fact that the feature cars are getting way further from what is attainable for the agerage Joe, some of the new things in the mag, such as the how to bomb up X motor, stages I-III are pretty informative, if a little simplistic. I wish they would go back to more of the DIY kinda cars/tech articles, and for christ sakes not advertise the snake oil products.

As for forums, this place isn't too bad really. There are people on here with a massive wealth of knowledge & experience - oh wait, they are all pimply 12yo's making it up I got pretty much all of the info to mod my car from a US forum specific to Galant VR4's, hell I even got a modified chip through one of the guys on there that gives me launch control/flat shift and a indicator of the knock the ECU is seeing.

Its like everything - use common sense and your own brain to wade through the bulshit.

Take the comments with a grain of salt.

I don't believe everything a mechanic says. (in most cases anything)
My mates are Full of sh*t.
The forums are rife with overstatements and crap.
                Same goes with magazines.

Who am i gonna believe? Where is the credibility.

I have read zoom, ff&r, hot 4s, street machine, imports, ever since most of the begun publishing. I have seen the electronic form change from the local bulletin board services - now who has ever done this - u know u are nerds!

I believe what i think is credible. Most statements you can figure what percentage is truth normally by the wow factor. I also believe videos to be the most credible media, as they are expensive and hard to b/s through.

Yeah, after watching an Option video, the first term that popped into my head was "credible" (and not "karaoke" or "ice skating").
Soft roaders represent an excellent compromise between the needs of the hardcore 4x4 user and the convenience of a city hatchback. Its clear to see why they have become so popular in todays society.

Zoom's OK....though performance buildups is sweet, lots of realy diy tech stuff...

Either way i would have never found out that there were a jap an BW box on sigmas and that the BW is a POS thats hard to fit into a 70's galant. PF rocks!
I also dont like the way Martin Donnon always writes off anything with a carby on it, giveing the EFI is so cheap(yes 1.5k for a computer is cheap) and blah blah. Its almost like unless your car does 10 second 1/4's or has efi its no good.

There is definitely some merit to what Warren has to say, but I think alot of you are taking this too personally. Some of you have already said that Warren doesn't post here much but, then you feel as though he is attacking this forum personally.

I beleive the Internet is a great place to do research but you do have to wade through the bullshit. Some of you guys have said that you can pop on here and get an answer in seconds, but what happens if the answer is wrong? You kill your car and the guy at the other end of the internet goes "oops"

The internet is no threat to car magazines, you can't take your computer to the loo to have a read, you can't whip your computer (unless it's a laptop) out of the car to show your mates, and rarely do you find tech articles that have all the information and pic's in one place. There is also no real thrill of achievement when your car is on an internet site unlike when your car is featured on the cover of a magazine.

Even this forum has had it's share of the ill-informed although there is probably a higher proportion of knowledgable people here than on most forums.

Remember the internet just gives some people who aren't smart enough to get a job somewhere to go. Given that I would always trust the printed word over the words written on the net of some faceless guy (or girl) at the other end of an internet connection.

I live in a developing nation in West Africa. There is not a single newsagent here. Having magazines & the like FedEx'd in from Austraila usually results in confiscation, as anything with pictures of girls in bikinis is deemed pornographic & gets you in *serious* hot water with the law. No, I'm not making that up...

Not being a smartarse here, this is a genuine question:

What's the difference between a faceless guy on the internet and the faceless guy who happens to be employed as a writer at a magazine?
"North ****ing Korea. Can you prove this?"
"Mr President. We're the CIA. We can prove anything."

Today I needed torque specs on my motor. Instead of spending HEAPS on a workshop manual, two minutes on www.honda-tech.com, check a few different threads to confirm the info and bingo, done!

I gotta say the INTERNET is the BEST thing to happen for people like us....especially if you are into engine conversions and fabrications.

For example back in 1993 (pre Internet) I started my first conversion....an FJ20T into 910 Bluebird....do you think I could find any info in Magazines???.......no...It was trial and error, word of mouth etc....

In 2000 and after aquiring the Internet I put an SR20T into a 910 Bluebird....what a difference, the amount of info...and people willing to help was amazing....the conversion was a relative breeze.

I have always purchased Mags, especially the likes of MOTOR.....even though the articles dont interest me much now, in 10years time when I can afford these cars they are a great source of info
