If they EVER make such devices compulsory, I'd lead a violent revolt against the government and ram these devices down their throats till they choke and die a horrible horrible death.

    Same fate for their supporters.

    :D

another point is how do they fit these, unless the car has a computer?
They wouldn't have a hope in hell of fitting one to my val, unless they redid the whole electrical system, including to add fuel injection, computer controlled box,etc

van318 what part of that do you not understand? They measure elapsed time between points and calculate an average speed between points.

that is exactly what I don't understand!
As I said in the first post,HOW does a speed camera do this, unless your car is fitted with some sort of tracking device?

the camera's can record the plates of a car, regonise the symbols and check em against a database.....hell, they can even do it with peoples faces now

I feel like i'm repeating myself here.

It takes a snapshot of every vehicle passing it.

A computerised system somehow extracts the number plate from the picture and records the time it passed the camera.

It waits for the next time the number plate registers on the next camera.

It then calculates the time between cameras. If the time is less than the amount of time it takes, travelling at 100km/h, it calculates an average speed and sends you an infringement and fine.

              All automatically.

....and people dont believe Victoria is the (by far) most corrupt, revenue raising government while innocent people are dieing on the roads.

Our fines are now linked to the CPI

Our fines are the greatest (by a considerable amount) in all of Australia.

If you exceed the speed limit by 25km/h then you immediately lose your licence for one month or longer. Plus a huge fine.

Exceeding the prescribed BAC concentration is ONLY a $460 fine. Sweet f.ck all.

Speed camera operations have been privatised. It's in the private company's interest to target bottoms of steep hills, long straight safe stretches of road etc, to gain most revenue.

Thats why I laugh when people like CyberianKnight make foolish statements like that. Oh please. You're going to make a difference.

....and one more post - It wont be long before the general public has a huge backlash against the government. A Herald-Sun survey recently concluded that 96% of a few thousand people considered speed camera's to be contributing nothing to road safety and only raising revenue.

Oh yeah, if you do 63km/h in a 60 zone or 103km/h in a 100 zone, its an immedate $125 fine.

Its so easy to play the game. Dont speed. It really does work.

Cruise control is the cost of one speeding ticket. I use it almost all the time when not surrounded by other cars.

Ok,see if I got this right. The SPEED CAMERA no1 records EVERY number plate that goes past it,as does speed camera no2,they then send this info back to a data base, where THOUSANDS of results are gone through,to work out if a few people are speeding?
Maybe I am completely wrong, but thousands, even more than 360 photo's an hour seems to be a bit hard to believe, and if they don't photo them, then how do they record the plates?

Yes, you are correct. Digital cameras. Digitised photos.

For the X86 windows based PC's, cheap Optical Character Recognition has existed for around 5 years. There is usually software bundled with scanners that does this.

How difficult is it to understand a computer can extract some letters and numbers from a digital photo?

I understand that it NSW,the cameras can take 1 photo every second.
Now,when u consider a 3/4 lane road, with everyone doing 100k's,how many cars are going to pass that camera in an hour,a lot more than 360.
So unless the camera can take multiple shots per second, how do they do it?

I haven't been down the West Gate Fwy since they installed the cameras but I have been down the Northern Ring Road, there is a camera in each lane.

They are completely digital and relay all data back to a central processing facility where they can empower as much computing equipment as the revenue they gather allows.

Edit - they are on overpasses and you dont see them as they face the direction you're travelling, hence take pictures of the rear of your vehicle.

Must be the cameras in vic are a lot different to those in nsw.
I don't believe there is such thing as cameras in each lane in nsw.
The biggest camera I've seen has 3 lenses,on the spit rd.

i thought they used to things on the ground, the 1st one triggers a timer, the 2nd stops the clock, using speed = distance/time they either snap your photo or let you pass
