skanka:.. the only think i can think of is that the computer was ramping up the ign advance to try and bring it onto boost..
This is a post i wrote by mistake, which is nice...

Not really my main point just inserted for wank value.
Main point is that Euro Jap cars are not as reliable as most people seem to think.

Didn't remember that one, very good :D

my comment re jap/euro cars vs aus was based on my personal experience and that of friends etc

if the hose clamp is half off then the turbo will be working harder to fill the engine with the required 'psi's. say for example the motor was seeing 6psi and there was another 6psi bleeding out. the turbo is working a lot harder and making the air a lot hotter,
maybe this hotter intake charge was making it ping

luke: they only run like 5psi anyway.. and if there was air leaking, i doubt the turbo would be able to keep up.. hmm maybe though.. its a thought, it would also be causing excessive backpressure.. also not good..

i still think it would probably be running waaaay too rich though..

I don't think anybody cept the ford engineer who designed the boost cut system would know what it's doing. I'd think the computer thinks you are trying to fool the system and takes action to retify the situation.

well when my hose going to the throttle body of my mx-6 turbs it immediatly started backfiring and spluttering and losing power then all sorts of buzzers went off..overboost, fuel cut etc.
the turbo sounded like it was gonna spin to its death. the sound was crazy!!!

Not knowing a whole bunch about the Falcoon, I'd say the ECU would see the excessive signal coming from the AFM (because its venting meterd air to atmospher) the ECU then proceeds to limit the amount of boost being run by the the turbo to limit this, but because the turbo isn't actualy making its 5-6psi it continuse to spool harder and harder, the AFM signal gets more and more crazy, ECU goes into secondary shut down mode cutting fuel to limit exhaust flow (hence excessive air flow), this combined more limiting controls being implimented would cause engine running resembling detonation. Wether it was indeed detonating is another stroy.

My old boy has had his BA Futura for a while now, and hes put a fair few ks on it. The car drives great, just a couple of little glitches.

                            Problems thus far
                            1. reversing sensors dislodged and started malfunctioning, had to take it back and get them sorted, 0.5 day off the road.

                            2. rear window was not correctly sealed and the rear passenger footwells would fill with water after heavy rain. Entire interior had to get stripped to find the problem, rear window and seal was replaced, window re-tinted, 2 days off the road.

Whenever I have had intercooler pipes blow off on my car when boosting big, you just hear a big bang when all the air pressure escapes, the revs drop and the car stalls. My car is undriveable if a pipe comes off.

from some testing that i've done in the past week the factory ford boost solenoid has a couple a problems in it concerning boost control. This has in a couple of cases where i've been asked to go a check these cars out for a dealer been the cause for pinging under 4500rpm

Big thanks to a lot for all your help and idea's guys.

I take delivery of a Harvest Green XR6T this afternoon.

(the article in Motor magazine this month also helped compund my decision, plus Wheels car of the year...how can you argue.)
