    Soarer Paint Quality

    i have been looking at a few Soarer's LS400 style ones and have noticed that the paint job on the them (mostly black and green ones) is not the best. Lots of orange peal etc.

    Is the paint usually this bad or have i just seen some bad examples.

    What year model u looking at?

    They are up to 14 years old remember... VN commies with original paint are looking pretty shit too.

    They have also been shipped here one a budget (read poor protection) basis.

      Looking at the early 1990's ones (V8 2door's etc)

      They arn't poor paint quality as in faded as most do with age etc more like a cheap paint job with lots of orange peel etc.

        I have seen some Mercedes and BMW's costing over $200,000 with paint that, to my eye, was none too good -lots of 'orange peel'

        It may be worthwhile to check out some Australian delivered LS400's of the same age for a comparison

        Also, if you are into Soarers, the Australian Lexus Soarer Owners Club is great

          I reckon the prob is two fold. I think in Japan the pollution must be a heck of a lot worse then in Oz, because most older imports have quite chalky paint with heaps of fine scratches...secondly, a lot of the imports have been cheaply repaired when they arrived in Oz.

            That "orange peel" quality was on a large proportion of expensive cars back in the 80's. The two options that seemed to be around were paint so thin it rusted around the sharper edges of the panels if you polished it a dozen times (eg. VK's & XF's, KA's & KB's), or thick & deep-looking with that orange peely effect (E28 5-series).

            Having said that, Babalouie's comments are very true; a lot of imports are quickly painted when they arrive. I also think that some manufacturers may have used cheaper or thinner paint for the JDM in the 80's - even when they were relatively new, cars of that vintage didn't fare too well in the Oz sun, compared to a moderately-equivalent model sold new here.
            Soft roaders represent an excellent compromise between the needs of the hardcore 4x4 user and the convenience of a city hatchback. Its clear to see why they have become so popular in todays society.
