No I was thinking more standard cars. Limited mods (eg exhaust) at the max.
RX7 is not what I would consider a "hatch(back)" - more a coupe.

I remember my girlfriends brother taking me for a ride in his one when I was 16 - the quad headlight laser model - I think it was when the small performance car bug really bit me. I crapped my pants and had a smile on my face all at the same time. A bit like doing OP.

Except there was a Jean Todt special for sale on the web a while back, was in white with the stripey bits. Wouldn't a hot hatch mean that the hatch is actually useable? The T16 had an engine in the back, not really suitable for the golf clubs
Tx3s certainly had pretty good power for their day. How well do they handle though?
I had an early love for a french blue quad headlight tx3 back when I was about 12. They were quick as back then!

Beautiful cars... about 250hp from the Evo 2 spec. There is one in the trading post for $60k!

Mm focus RS wuld have to be my fave HH today.. Course it is a tad expensive and not actualy available in oz.
I think at the bargain end in Australia the Swift GTi's and the AE82 "Twin Cam"' were quick, cheap and reliable and enthralled their fans with constant dualing in the touring car series.
The TX3 and 323 turbo & 4wd turbo models were the pioners of packing a lot of power and technlogy into a small affordable package in oz.. They were the first on the scene with the DOHC turbo + 4wd + reasonable price that is now a favorite with ram raiders ect.
The Pug 205 GTi was the standout HH in terms of chasis dynamics and feel.. It was not just a fast shopping hatch but it also had the dynamics of much more expensive sports cars.
Then there were the rally ones, Familia GT-R, Pulsar GTi-R, Lancia Delta Evo, Escort Cosworth,
The path of the righteous man is beset on all sides by the lag of the boxer and the unreliability of rotary. Blessed is he who, in the name of power and throttle response, shepherds the weak through the valley of detonation, for he is truly his brother's tuner and the maker of huge power. And I will strike down upon thee with furious boost and great acceleration those who attempt to outrun and outhandle my brothers. And you will know my name is SR when I lay my vengeance upon you.

As a street car though? I mean it was an awesome rally car, but might not be that good to drive on the street. Ie it may understeer off the road!
Not exactly value for money, easy to work on, or cheap to run....

Mk1 Golf I'd say, plenty of scope for modification (i.e five different bolt in engines) extremely light, wheel at each corner kind of car, good for smoking understeer on corners too!
Here's mine...
