I wonder how the statistics compare for deaths due to fatigue and drink driving .versus. speeding?

How about we start confiscating the cars of drink drivers?

Oh wait, its probably because the pollies and their arrogant mates are usually the ones doing the drink driving. 1 champagne at a corporate function my arse.
.o( sometimes I think i'd be better off dead. no wait, not me. you )

rejectionline.com.au - Its probably useful to someone.

Cred why ask me for a solution, the solution is often a personal and social one. All of my friends who are into motorsport are very aware of road safety.
But for arguments sake, a 3 tiered lic system denoting level of training and ability to access vehicles of different performance capabilities. Retesting every 2 years. RWC on modified vehicles every year. the 3kph voluntary taxation is a joke. 5kph over and a fine, 10kph over and loss of lic for 2 weeks, 20 kph over and loss of lic for 4 weeks, 25kph over and 6 months all plus fines...penalities mandatory but notification up to police discretion (UK police are MUCH better than aust) with NO incentives or quota's for the police. Any situation with the higher faults MUST include video evidence for the court.
Any driver with no points loss for a year gets 1/2 price registration on one vehicle for the following year.
All schools to include basic and advanced driving courses. All schools should have as part of this working with the crash victims in institutions for 1 week full time...to get up the community awareness of road trauma, All news reports to note the deaths/head injuries/ serious trauma rather than the stats.
More motorsport tracks in the country and city.
Uniformity of laws from state to state.
The basics are simple enough. Australia is not wealty and has a harsh enviroment. We cannot afford to have a perfect road system, but the popular road culture in australia is not a particularly educated one and it is also one that venerates 'larriken' behaviour which when it goes wrong is so often fatal or worse. I think that the motorsport enthusiast often gets their jollies on the track and thus may not feel the need to speed...but also I think that most motorsport guys know bullshit and understand the issues. I am not impressed by the high kW engines in zoom as I know that this does not make a capable car nor does it mean the owner can contol the car well at all. I think that burnouts show a lack of self-respect etc etc
The part about cultural shift is an important issue for us here perhaps as it is something we can affect within our group. I will do something myself in a formal manner as a business venture, so I intend to put my money where my mouth is.
So there you go, you asked. There is more but not for this forum.

um just reding thru this thread i know i cant really offer any reall valid points as i havent lost anyone or suffered major problems thru speeding, only thru inattention , one roo outside barbagallo raceway and a written off car 200m from home, bbut i was thinking as i see alot of families travelling does anyone belive that a bigger fine/dermit loss should be imposed for families speeding? and driver retraining?

nero ther was a piece in the local street car mag, c-red you may of red this article, of a 500kw falcon doing insane speeds on a strectch of road tyhat is unnamed, i feel that is okay but when talking to these ppl who i buy some bits off they constantly talk of doing roughly 240km/h on the freeway. should they be pennalised with a loss of lic and a treble fine, any chance of then not speeding. but as we all no speed sells just like sex

Interesting note about Zoom - I read an issue the other day and couldn't find a single word/quote/notation of the rather important factor, torque

Amusing considering 5l V8's were being analysed.

Fish I do not have answers and these are not really my problems to fix and I think few people would listen to me.
The harm/trauma issue is not only to self but to others. In my mind placing others at risk is inexcusable and blatantly stupid. As such I think driving recklessly in traffic is just plain dumb. Police should have no qualms in being very tough on people who do such things. The police should be more lenient when the road is deserted and 'safe' and a person is 10kph over the limit.
Frankly I think that unless the structure of the falcon was significantly enhanced 500kw would be too much for it, but again it depends on what you are using it for. Most 'street machine/cars' rarely get a hard time, which is probably for the best. Cars that do significant track time are usually engineered quite differently in my experience e.g. you rarely seen a $5k paint job but you will often see a plumbed in fire system and proper harness locations etc. Unfortunately never the twain shall meet?
Speed sells like sex...often the crucial element that attracts in both is excitement and power over ourselves and others.

If everyone keeps speeding and paying the fines and giving the Government the money they are after then nothing will ever change.

The reason people speed isnt because they want to for the most part, its because its natural to speed(ie, be above the arbitary limit) on a lot of roads (85th percentile speed) and its a huge effort not to, tiring, increases risk of road trauma.

If people all of a sudden started to manage this, there would be more accidents, giving the govco an excuse to lower the speed limits even more, therefore more speeding revenue and even more accidents to justify higher penalities for the increased accidents.

                Its a self-fulfilling scam.

The change will come when (if) the public realise that going above the arbitary "limit" DOES NOT increase road trauma incident rates.

Its been proven statiscally that travelling at the 85th percentile be that below OR above the "limit" is the safest way to travel. Its the most natural speed, the speed at which you are most alert and travel the safest. People generally ARENT suicidal.

Wait for fines to go up, and tolerances to come down when compliance increases, oh wait, its already happened.

The only way we can get the government to stop and think (or at least throw a spanner in the works) is to unite, as motorists, under one common banner or lobby group, and make ourselves heard (be it through documentaries, ad-campaigns, etc.). As they say, united we stand, divided we're conquered.

Apart from raising the standards of licenses (make them harder to earn or certain licences for power/weight ratios of cars (with increasing difficulty as the ratio increases)), I can't think of much else to add to this discussion.

Heres what I saw over the NYE break.

December 31st we drove to Lakes Entrance which is about 400km east of Melbourne. Not one speed camera, not one mobile radar trap, not one police vehicle on the side of the road having pulled up a motorist. It was relatively heavy traffic. Saw a few drunk people that couldn't keep the vehicle straight at all.

Janurary 1st between 9pm-1am on the drive home. Passed no less than 6 police pointing their laser toys at me and other vehicles. One booze bus (which I commend) Vehicle density: about one car every minute on the highway. Not one drunk had been pulled up at the operation. I asked how long they'd been there and they said an hour.

I didn't ask why they were raising revenue on the highway though.
