I remember one of the "selling points" of the Camira in 82 was that is could go from Sydney to Melbourne on one tank of fuel. And they came out in a Bright Orange colour which stood out for miles.
Surprisingly, my Father bought a JD Camira from the second hand auctions after our Sigma wagon got washed away from our driveway in the big Wollongong flood of 97.
He put on about 150,000 kms on it and never had a problem with it.
Ended up selling it with about 270,000kms and was still going fine.

I don't want to defend camiras... However, they do seem to be a car that can be quite good, or an absolute shitbox. You get heaps of people who go "shitbox? never had any trouble with mine", and a huge crowd who go "always had trouble with mine! shitbox..."
The late model ones actually seem like an OK car, certainly not much if any worse than the opposition at the time.
They also seem to make an OK autocross/khanacross/motorkhana hack for tightarses.
I don't like them, but in a lot of cases they don't deserve the bad rep.I've seen things you people wouldn't believe, and from this side only! The flight of a half-man, half-bird. Dinosaurs nuzzling their young in pastures where strip-malls should be. Cookies on dowels. All those moments lost in time; gone like eggs off a hooker's stomach. Time to die.

There are a number of cars around that've earned bad reputations due to having production runs that were too long (eg. RWD Volvos), being poorly developed when first released (Camiras), having styling that didn't suit the times/buyers (eg. AU Falcon), etc etc etc, which aren't actually bad cars in many/most ways.
However ... because this is such an old thread, adding anything to it would be a lame & sad thing to do, so I won't. :DSoft roaders represent an excellent compromise between the needs of the hardcore 4x4 user and the convenience of a city hatchback. Its clear to see why they have become so popular in todays society.

I think I'm too old to think the XF Falcon ever had a bad reputation ... I got my L's on a Ghia.

Strange how the same car in Europe has somewhat of a cult following yet here they are outkast

In 1982 when it won car of the year lets not forget what it was up against.....the L20 Bluebird, GH Sigma, RWD Mazda 626.....hardly themselves great cars, The Camira was a generation ahead of all of them, if Holden had fitted the 2.0 EFI motor from the European SRi Cavaliers or Asconas than the gutless 1.6 Carb jobbies into just one of the model range they could have got of to a much better start...but hey thats history
