How does the handling of a MX5 compare to a 205 GTi?
I own a two and a half litre Commodore

It's the season for MX buying... My other half and I picked up her new MX-5 on the weeknd. An '01 (last of the 113kw jobbies) NB 6spd Sunlight Silver hardtop. We scored it still under original factory warranty which had been extended out and extra giving us close to 18 months of genuine Mazda goodness.

It has the dreaded 6spd box cold clutch chatter thing but at it's 50000km service (it's at 43K, due on time) a new clutch will go in under warranty.

Asides from that a great little car. personaly I think it's one of the easiest cars to drive fast. A lot of that comes down to it lacking the outright power to do anythign nasty.

however I'm quite sure the Clio I had would be a quicker car overall, it's just takes mroe effort to get that speed out of it.

A direct comparison between the MX and the XR6T ain't fair on either car, but I'd say it does show just how well the XR does handle... It has weight worked hard against it yet isn't that far down the ladder...

FWIW, since I bought my MX5, no fewer than five of my friends have gone out and bought them too. Dunno what it is...but after a brief drive of mine they all go out and buy one for themselves!

Bleagh ... my Volvo affected people thusly as well.
Mind you, these "people" were driving Mk1 Escorts at the time ...

'Tis certainly a spate of MX5 buying at the moment though! You guys are gonna be forcing the prices up!!
Soft roaders represent an excellent compromise between the needs of the hardcore 4x4 user and the convenience of a city hatchback. Its clear to see why they have become so popular in todays society.

                    (last of the 113kw jobbies)
The rumour has it that it (SVT engine) never produced that figure outside Japan (lax emission standards and 100RON availability). There was a big storm made of it in the USA and we essentially get the same spec as them.

The revised spec (lol) it lost 6kw and about 15Nm yet records the same acceleration times. Go figure

The best bang for bucks change to that model MX5 isn't to do with the engine... replace the standard shocks with Konis. It transformed my mates MX5 SP. Gives it back the nimbleness of the NA series. Don't be temped to lower the car either.

Dunno what it is...but after a brief drive of mine they all go out and buy one for themselves!
Cause they are finally CHEAP. An NA for a weekend runabout for <$15k is tempting.

So is an NB8B for 25-27K

Not sure how they'll depreciate though, in these times of mega depreciation.

Certainly represents value for money compared to a $15k MGB. :p

Why do you say not to lower the car?

...there isn't enough suspension travel/ground clearance as it is

Mine's lowered, but I kinda regret it, even though it looks much better and on a good day the stiffer suspension handles like a dream.

Exactly... and the bump stops form part of the spring medium. So lowering it can cause all sorts of problems.

Mine is really low, but is also on coilovers. Doesn't seem to cause any problems for me, except the front wheels rub on the inner guard sometimes when pushing hard on a bumpy road.

$15k aint cheap for me I guess cheap is a relative thing, relative to my income $15k isn't cheap for a toy.

Good retained value for up to a 15 year old car though, probably won't drop much more value either. I'll have to try driving one someday & see if it makes me want to buy one.
