I appreciate the comments about Chinese manufacture.

Obviously the vast majority of consumer electronics comes from there.

Consumer consoles like the PS2 come from there.

I have no problems buying mass market electronics from China. A blown up DVD player is not likely to damage much other than my burnt DVDs!

But what is their background on precision mechanical items?

Doubly so, what is their background on precision high performance motor parts?

What is their background on automobile manufacture?

You don't need me to answer that.

Lots of factors to consider. HKS do some manufacturing in Thailand - does that lower their quality?? But they are a multinational company with a very high profile and established reputation - they put the r&d in and must maintain a certain quality level.

Harry chong in his chinese countryside factory/sweatshop is another matter altogether. Perhaps he does pay his staff enough for them to care about the product, perhaps they do use quality materials, perhaps the factory does have worthwhile quality control, perhaps they are closely following a proven design, maybe they have even done some r&d and have their own legion of hi-po cars rippin' it up in downtown shanghai.

      And maybe not.

Get what you pay for. Gamble on the rest.

I wouldn't be so fast to comment Tony on the quality of manufacturing in China.

I've had some pretty good chopsticks from China. Similar situation to the turbo's too! If one were to break and i was to swallow it the damage done to my internals and even my exhaust housing could be fairly bad! :D

The chopsticks have always held up though!

Am keen to find out some reports on these turbo's!!

you make it sound like turbos are hand carved from a lump of steel.
you are talking about a product that is mass produced using the latest prescision cutting machines, most of which are made in china any way.

            All you would need to set up a plant to make turbos is;
            *a borrowed garret turbo
*a good draftsman with a good set of verniers
*latest CNC and lathe machines, probably a good laser cutter as well
*a machinest with some competence in the above machines
*some good marketing and a few outlets around the world.

you will find that these turbos would be direct copies of someones elses, probably garrett. this company wont be at the for front of reseach, they probably dont even have a research department.
The company i work for had it done to them about 5 years ago. a disgrunted employee took lots of info when he left and set up his own company. they now make direct copies of our product, hell their catalogues are even the same, apart from a few slight number changes.

Anyone can make copies with the right tools and the Asian market is the king of Knock offs.

George wants to take over the rest of your business :p

I agree with Mutta most of the precision cutting equipment is coming out if SE Asia and China now. Quality has more to do with QA practices than country of origin.

Give it another 10 years maximum and the majority of after market automotive products will be manufactured from cradle-to-grave in China.

The amount of stuff pouring out from there now is huge, everything from air filters and fuel pumps is being punched out by the shipping container. A friend of mine who manufacturers after market parts has a contact in his industrial park who orders stuff directly from the factories in China. He gave me the example of a BBQ and how he shipped parts from here to China to be copied. After a few tries at it and constant to and froing they developed a superior BBQ at a much cheaper price then any of the stuff built here. The material they used for the burners was as good or better and every part of the BBQ was good quality with none of the cheap charlie look you used to get from Chinese products 10 years ago.

Eventually they will even get engineers to work out the background theory of the product they are trying to knock off. Then it’s only a matter of time before they start pumping out advanced manufacturing products such as turbo’s for a fraction of the usual cost.

                          now thats a bit harsh.

I currently work for a Pneumatics company (well till 5.00 tomorrow). the company that copied a large part of our product range were very very good. to the point where without the label they were identical. the quality was very good. most of the parts are a combination of cast alloy and machined alloy. there only downfall with some of the parts was not being able to copy or access certain seals that we use in our actuators. if they were able to do that they could make a mess in the market place. they are still very big in Asian market and have made their way to australia. luckily they havent made much impact due to customer loyalty.

pupat is right QA is the most import part of manufacture and them stupid ISO ratings. Mercedes makes their comercial vans in Asia and people i have spoken to who own them reakon they are fantastic.
