Domokun SPl, the "ghetto mount" oil coolers aren't a new fad
The Japs have done it like that for a long time, especially on circuit cars like Datto 1600's and old 70's Skyline's - its just a trend to show off the coolers. it also puts them somewhere they will get airflow without blocking of radiator airflow.

I think it's because in the 70's that's where sports-sedan type Japanese race cars mounted it, so it's a bit of an affectation. That's also where a lot of the influences come from for the body kits, that really old-school 70's sihouette-formula sports sedan look, with the box flares and the huge wings.
But that whale-bus thing that they do with the vans...I have no explanation nor theory for that
