Well thats no bloody good then.
I thought the 3 litre TD surf would be OK, its the same engine as the Prado & hilux isnt it?

Subarus are my least favourite & they dont have a low range so they are out anyway.

Tim, I aint getting no cart axle 'mwb cruiser (bundera)
    Prados are too much $
Patrol might be OK if I could get a TD...dont want the old 4.2 with no huffer.
Pajero...probably use a lot less juice than a Patrol.

    Off to check Patrol prices...

No, I'm pretty sure manual Liberty wagons always had low range.

Does it have to be large? Those little Suzuki girly-4WD's named after fake icecream (Vitaras) are a cut above the Hilux/Rodeo/Triton-based bunch in terms of on-road put-up-ableness.
Soft roaders represent an excellent compromise between the needs of the hardcore 4x4 user and the convenience of a city hatchback. Its clear to see why they have become so popular in todays society.

        No subarus regardless.

Cant fit all the crap I want to into a suzuki.

Anyone know anything about jackaroos? They have a 3.1 turbo D.

Patrol 2.8 TD is very athsmatic & I dont want to tip $ into having a 4.2 turboed...

          Edo,

Just spoke to a mate of mine who services lots of 4WD's and he tells me the following for the NJ (1993) Onwards 2.8 TD Pajeros...

Check for regular servicing, regular oil changes are a must. Whilst they don't suffer anywhere near as badly as the Hilux/surf diesels for sludging - they can suffer if not properly serviced.

They can develop a notchy gearbox - as long as it's not too bad and not noisy - that should be fine - once again, regular servicing and oil changes are a must to ensure longevity.

All Mitsu TD's blow a little smoke on boost, so don't be too concerned about this, as long as it is not overly excessive - it should be fine.

Turbo life when regularly serviced and with correct idle down etc is said to be very good.

They often have a problem withthe OIl pressure switch which results in the wrong signal being sent to the guage, so if it's reading wrongly - changes are this is the culprit, rather than the pressure itself.

Some have been known for very noisy/rattly timing chains, as long as the chain is not overdue for replacement - and you can live with the noise, they are not a major concern. Replace it if worried..

They have a few customers with these and it's not uncommon for 200,000 to 250,000 kms without any mechanical problems as long as services are done.

Other than the "Normal" Pajero things to look for (worn rear control arm bushes/donuts that start to squeak, saggy front torsion bars (especially when a bull bar/winch is fitted) etc) they are a great buy.

Economy is said to be certainly better than the V6 3.0 and 3.5, however the new 3.2 TD is awesome in comparison.

          Hope this helps.

            go the pajero diesel.

IMHO mitsu diesels own any other equivalent sized diesels for power and reliability, whereas toyota petrols own any other equivalent petrol motors.

pajero = trusty no brainer that'll do everything you want.

Seeing as you've mentioned Hilux, have you considered one of them?, the xtra-cab model, my mother owned one for some years, very practical with the ute tray on the back, proper 4wd low range, reasonable comfort, she did plenty of 8hr plus drives in it, diesel economy, only thing against it was it was a bit slow.

I didn't know how long the LWB Vitaras were; thought I may as well ask anyhoo.
Liberty wouldn't be able to fit a bike upright anyway, regardless of any quality & comfort pluses.

Know nothing about the Jackaroo turbodiesel; the old 2.8TD was slug-city in a Rodeo (as in slower than a KE30 Corolla two-speed auto), but I know bugger-all about the 3.1.

These things are all nasty to drive, I wouldn't write any of them off on the basis of not being comfortable enough on the highway (eg. your Bundera comments) 'cos none of them will be unless you're willing to compromise on potential reliability (eg. Disco).

Hiluxes have solid axles / leaf springs all round and whilst this is great for load carrying and hard core off road, They can't match the Independant front end and coil springs on-road, - which I am guessing is where this will spend 85% of it's life...

You sure you're not getting confused by a broken front suspension beam?

Ride was still pretty bouncy, don't know how it compares to a Pajero though.

Yeah, It will spend most of its time on road...mainly because it takes more time getting to places than being there...

So do any of the other utes have IFS?

Im just thinking navara, rodeo, triton...theyd probably be OK. Need to check prices...

2.4L navara/pathfinder is the slowest thing I have ever driven in my life, including morris 1100's. However it was excellent off road.

Nah, utes cost as much as wagons & arent as comfy or secure so its off to look for the Pajero I think.
