My parents bought a 2003/2004 model turbo diesel pajero few months ago. damn its a nice car but the engine is really noisy. On the highway its fine, but in city traffic it can get quite chattery. dunno if this applies to the 10 year old models though. If you can live with the noise a pajero is an excellent buy, weve had 3 different (new) models for the last 7-8 years now.

2 door Pathfinders are getting a bit old (older diesels are real bad)...the latest shape is 3.3 petrol only.

Did think of a couple of alternatives though.

Nissan Terrano II & ssayong (sp?) musso

I'd avoid the Ssangyong/Hyundai Musso ... sure it's a MB engine, but it's not MB build quality. Imagine MB parts-cost but 80's Lada assembly quality ...

Dunno that a Terrano II has any more room than a LWB Vitari, but still gotta be worth a look.

ssanyong has more rattles than Babyco even when they were brand new. Avoid these things like a 6 month old service station pasty.

              OK thanks.

I think the Paj still wins.

A 6 month old service-station pasty might also be a viable alternative at a lower price?

There was an epidose of M*A*S*H a wee bit like that ... Klinger started eating a Jeep. Come to think of it, that was set in Korea too, wasn't it?

I did some work for Daewoo around the time they took over Ssangyong (about 2000/1 I think). I went out to look at the new fleet parked out at Moorebank holidng yards to get an idea of what the stock was like. I sh*t you not, but the majority of the cars out there were with 2-3 years old build plates on them. The smaller jeep thingy was even worse. Nothing worse than buying a "new" car and finding out that its already 3 yo.

I had a friend who bought a Ssangyong Musso when they first came out - he sold it 8mths later - sick to death with the piss poor performance and the attrocious build quality.

So he shopped around (ignoring my suggestion for a V6 3.5 Pajero) and he bought a Ford Explorer... He regrets that too... although at least he has the power now - the build quality still sucks though

They don't hold their value that well and their salvage value (post accident) is very low compared to others in the class.. Steer clear in my opinion...

                          Yeah, I know youre right.
The Pajero is the way to go.

crank bolts can come loose especially if timing belt done and not tightened to FT torque spec and will result in a hammered out crank snout, and stuffed keyway, balancer and t.belt lower cog.

But an be repaired by removal and dipping to build up damaged area.prone to leaks from alternator due to vacum pump seal going brittle.gearbox prone to get notchy and new synchros does not fix it completely.
also can depending on 4wd treatment get troubles with front diff locking hubs.

all in all not a bad 4wd for the money.

                              Isuzu MU?

I believe they came in a turbo diesel.. look reasonable imo.. and have seen them as low as $10k, average seems to be $12-14k though
                              Thank You,

Nah, early Frontera/MU would be too small. Prolly better to get a Rodeo crew-cab with a canopy, it's the same thing but with more room.
