I thought we were talking about a SWB here? surely the MWB MU would be larger than the SWB Pajero?

also.. apparently the frontera are a bucket of underpowered shit in comparison to the MU.. though they are only a 4 seater.
    Thank You,
    Management.

    8 cylinders, 5 carby's, 6 wheels.

Nah, if a Vitari is too small then it wouldn't be a SWB Paj.
Mu's were available with the Rodeo 2.6 as well as the Family-II 2.0, but again it's pretty-much just a Rodeo in wagon form. The 2.6 really wasn't that much more exciting than the Camira motor; just a smidgin more driveability.
Soft roaders represent an excellent compromise between the needs of the hardcore 4x4 user and the convenience of a city hatchback. Its clear to see why they have become so popular in todays society.

might pay to look for an older landcruiser they are tough as and when you get bored you can drop ina v8.
forget the bunderra they have shocking coil spring set up I owned one for a few years and they hate corrigations and are down right dangerous on them.
pajero could be good value at the right price.
also a dual cab use should be considered.
If your planning on beach work a petrol could be a better choice. you need outright power quite often then.
patrols seem ok just check for rust. I would prefer a higher milage diesel than a city ran low =milage one cause htechances are it hasnt been serviced much.
good luck edo I'm glad I'm over my 4wd stage if I need one now I just rent one do the sums it can quite often work out cheaper and less hassles

          yorgo, thanks...sounds severe!
postman, nah Im definately looking at thw LWB paj.

Meggala, Id love another 80 series cruiser but couldnt go older than that due to their on road behaviour.
I may find a old 80 series diesel but usually they are still over $20k. I could get a petrol but the old 4.2 were a shocker of an engine & the 4.5 is still too much money...not to mention Ive owned one of them & did notice its thirst.

The pajero TD makes about 10% less power than the 3 litre 6 but the diesel makes about 40% more torque which would be better in the sand.

Im in no hurry to buy this thing, but if one pops up for the right $ I'll have a go at it.
God knows Im still waiyting for my XR6T & then have to pay for all the mods on it...

If you've not compared a Pajero to an 80-series in onroad terms, the Pajero should quite pleasantly surprise you.

And you're not wrong about the 4.2 being a dog of an engine, a friend is currently lumbered with an early 80-series for a "company car" and is getting over 25L/100km - almost exclusively outer western Sydney & peripheral country-area use, so it's mostly highway stuff, and it's also mostly unladen.

Ive driven pajeros of that vintage ('94ish) but only petrols...Ive driven both petrol engines & the diesel in 80 series cruisers.

To drive I prefer the 4.5 petrol cruiser then probably the pajero then the diesel 'cruiser then the old 4.2...I dont doubt those consumption figures either...

Id be hoping a TD Paj would run 2nd to the petrol cruiser.

edo: revist your past and buy another Disco...think about it !! Any Disco over 5 years old that is still on the road will have had thousands spent on it correcting the mistakes made at the factory.

Budget for another $4k per year and will have some happy motoring mixed with regular bushwalks ...the bushwalks being when it decides to stop in the middle of nowhere due to a blown interior light fuse which also supplies power to the CD player which for some unknown reason is linked to the central locking which is in turn on the same ECU as the rear window wiper and if the rear window wiper doesn't have power the car won't start.

                Or maybe buy a pajero
                .

haha, you know, I looked at prices for 10 yo disco diesels & damn they are cheap...I thought briefly about it...

Then I bludgeoned myself about the face with a tyre lever & realised that the bludgeoning was a far more pleasant experience than british car ownership.

Correct .......the brusies and broken bones from the bludgeoning will eventually heal but the emotional scars from owning a british car never go away

I believe that 10yo Discos used an Isuzu turbodiesel engine which is able to run faithfully & reliably an an Isuzu vehicle for many thousands of kilometres. In a Discovery ... well, I suppose having insurance isn't total piece-of-mind, as when it eventually burns to the ground you could be stuck in the middle of nowhere ...

As for onroad behaviour, I haven't driven a Pajero newer than when Exceeds had a 3.0, but I did think they were nicer to drive than a 4.5 Landcruiser in terms of road-manners (although certainly not power; the Pajero was similar to my mate's automatic 1986 Volvo 240GL in acceleration).

Old Discos did not use the Isuzu donk...it was only used by landrover in a batch of Defenders built for the Australian army.

BTW late 80's Rangies used a VM diesel that was an Italian marine donk that is widely regarded as the worst diesel in the world.

                          Hmmm Izuzu eh?
Still cant bring myself to consider it. The faults with my one were certainly not restricted to the engine...actually apart from the leaks that bit was OK...
The diffs, the gearbox, the clutch, the body, the trim, the suspension, the fuel system & the radiator all had their fair share of problems though...Im going back to that tyre lever

I like 'cruisers...I know you dont. If I was towing I wouldnt have anything else. I hope to hell a little TD pajero will use significantly less fuel than my old 4.5 petrol cruiser did...& drive as well. Then Id be a happy camper.
