I think the ML has better approach/departure angles than the X5 but that doesnt matter.
In reality I think Id struggle to buy a 4wd without low range, even if it is only used on the beach or in the snow...its going to be easier if youve got it. But I doubt Merc will keep it...I doubt 99% of their customers know what that button does.

I think the G wagen is just a military/mine spec thing OS now.

Thing is, as youve pointed out, nobody does any off roading anyway...hence Ford being the clever people they are have released the territory in 2wd.

Yep, its officially out & you can go test drive one. Im picking up my XR on Saturday & if theyve got one handy I might see if I can take it for a quick run around the block

*shrug* do your own research then
Broadford often seem to have bargains every now and then though. They had a pajero which is what I had in mind for you but it was sold.

I'd hazzard to say I prefer a pajero on the highway to my mx5 damn thing will make you motion sick unless you lock your arm in position and don't even think about sneezing or you'll be across 7 lanes of traffic.

edo: you should have mentioned you were looking for a 4wd when I saw you on Monday!! This is exactly the price range I was looking for one in.

You could also have driven the Jackaroo I just bought as a comparison - $14500 (but petrol) 94 model in very good nick (and as you know with the HSV kit - not that I was looking but it was the best one I saw!). In all my hunting, I prefered how they drove to a Pajero and for the equivalent features and km they were around 2K cheaper. The bodies on these are also triple galvanised. Best bang for buck IMHO.

If you have looked on carsales they have a really neat feature that e-mails you when new cars in your search criteria come up - check out the auto alerts in the members section.

I'll look forward to your fuel economy reports...I understand the TD Jackaroo was a pig so if I went for that it would be a petrol one just like yours (cept maybe not the mega exclusive HSV version!)

Definately a viable alternative though thanks.

At the moment I own an XR6T (just paid for it) & still the merc (trying to sell) so Im a touch short of funds. The 4wd will have to wait until I sell the merc...

Dont know anyone in the luxobarge market do you?

                    Edo,

One more for the mix. Have you thought of Jeep Wrangler, or a Cherokee Sport? Whilst I have not driven a Sport, I had a Wrangler for a few months looking after for a mate, plenty of grunt on the road and sand, and they look good. Not sure about build quality, but they are darn fun.

                    Regards.

Yeah, wrangler isnt big enough & I did consider the cherokee...but forgot it again.
Not sure if there are any real dramas with them, but as you say the build quality is a bit off.

Its worth considering though, its a 4 litre ancient basic 6cyl but it works...Id have to check a few out.

Unfortunately, they don't have the best reputation for reliability.
The Jeeps would be suss for similar reasons; although they might be reliable & only have trim/interior bits fall off & break. Mind you, a 70-series Troopie or 110-series Landie is probably similar to drive yet more reliable ... *grin*
Soft roaders represent an excellent compromise between the needs of the hardcore 4x4 user and the convenience of a city hatchback. Its clear to see why they have become so popular in todays society.

Yeah, this is the 3.2L V6 - but of course I am considering a Lexus V8 as replacement when the time comes (all the HSV lovers gasp!) - would be a nice compromise between economy and grunt methinks. Will let you know once I have done a couple of trips for both hihgway and city figures if you like. Going to Spicer's Gap next month for long week-end so will be a good test of highway. Should know wiythin a week city km Not that the GC is that much stop start ...

Luxobarge market, unfortnuately not. But I do know a guy who buys and sell 4wds every day at Springwood - he was looking for us but we found this one first. E-mail me for details if you want them.
