I say the sole reason road deaths have dropped a small percentage in the past few years is the drought. Drivers are not getting better. Slowing down is not saving lives.

You watch this year with heavier rainfall, there will be a lot more fatalities on the roads compared to the previous few years.

    Speed will obviously be blamed.

Rusty, I'd slightly veer left to the reply you wrote to SomeCluelessMofo_, I agree that if everyone slowed down, something would happen. What will happen, I dont know, I would assume the government would immediately lower speed limits further and start fining more people. Seriously, what else could they do? People would continue dying at the same rate as four years ago and they need cause to justify their actions.

if you do 40 in an 80 zone you are open for a fine of obstructing traffic, so really the only way to protest this is to not drive at all.

Its pretty pathetic. When i moved out of VIC last year and to QLD its like a totally different world and a totally different mindset. Cops are much more relaxed. Speeding enforcement is more about safety rather than revenue, and all side cameras are market and viewable. People slow down, and people know that if they go too fast they may get booked by an undercover cop or a fixed camera unless they keep an eye out (which they should anyhow), or drive to excessive speeds.

You have to go about 10-15km/hr over the speed limit in many areas to get done at all. Back like VIC used to be when i first started driving 10 years ago. People aren't dropping off like flies, the idiots still kill themselves. But no matter what you do, you can't protect everybody all the time from their own mistakes.

Maybe if they raise the speed limit to 200kmh everywhere, very few will get speeding fines. A few still will of course. What they lose in speed fines they will make up in fuel excise cos everybody will be boostin up. LOL:D

The only place you see cameras in are places with good road that it it common people tend to speed on... stuffed if you ever see a speed camera in a spot where accidents frequently happen!

            I'm yet to see one!

true, true.. i do notice that. i did say "more about safety" :D.. there is still stupid crap like that too thats kind of universal.

VIC it was getting to the point where'd i'd travel down the same roads every day for like years, and i'd never see absolutely any sign of a major accident ever happening or even look like happening.

Yet there in that 60km zone every couple of days (in peak hour often -- how many fatalities happen in peak hour??!) would be the little unmarked Rav4 with the little thing on front getting every 100th car or so probably for going a pissy 3km/hr over.

The VIC government probably would claim that "hey the reason there were no accidents was because of the speed cameras along there".. whereas my response would be "bullshit, there were never any accidents along there anyhow!" dumbasses!

One thing about our drought conditions...

DO NOT DRIVE WHEN IT RAINS!!!

I cannot be any more clear.

People are so NOT used to rain it's like demolition derby.

And I would not even count on the 'enthusiast' to be any better.

I saw so many homos in HSVs/XR Fords and RWD imports who cannot control their right foot in the wet.

thats so true.. theres speed camera's all the time on my street where people would probably max at 60 km/h down but generally everyone obeys speed limit.. but when i drive out to my car at workshop at capalabah... on morton bay rd people do like 140- 150 and its like a 70 or 80 zone.. i havent seen a speed camera there once

Yeah, there were about 31 or so people involved in crashes (1 dead, 6 critical and so on) when there was a decent downpour a few days ago across the metro area of Perth after a relatively decent dry spell. I'd say it was mainly due to oils and stuff that leak from tonnes of cars being brought out of the asphalt because of the water from the rain and making the roads a little more slippery than usual.
                    Back in bloody Perth again...

I agree with this statement fully except for this bit "I saw so many homos in HSVs/XR Fords and RWD imports who cannot control their right foot in the wet." Tony i don't think it's that they can't control their right foot. It's that they just don't want to. :p

Silly boys.. Get some www.speedingisbullshit.com stickers made up and i'd happily stick one on my car in a flash.

And i belive Bozz is correct also.

Now for my thoughts of speed and how i'd like to drive. As our speed limits stand apart from the highly consgested areas like CBD and chocked up roads through parts of citys i don't mind the low speed limits there at all, Although you'd expect people to use their common sense and just drive slow anyway when it comes to highways and the open roads they tend to just want to put my to sleep. 100KM/H with no bends and driving a quiet new car. It's enough to put anyone to sleep.
Now i ask a question. If the speed limits on highways were abolished what do you think would happen ? How fast would you cruise at ? Are you going to feel a little scared when you see a rusty Mitsubishi Sigma blasting blue smoke and trying to do 150. I think the rules which say what makes our cars road worthy will have to be tightened up also for the safety of others. Some of the cars on our roads are outright scary when it comes to their stability and safety at speeds.

This is why we should have a high standard of annual checks to get rid of the rust buckets that are unroadworthy. Not some person with their brake tester sit in their office seat, lower the braking machine and then lifting it up for a brake test without having to even see the car in the first place.

Almost zero crashes are caused-by, or even have a contribution from, mechanical failure. That means getting "rustbuckets" off the road will make approximately zero difference at all.

I can't see it being particularly good for a mechanic if they get caught lying about a car's roadworthiness. The current test is just fine ... at least it's only ~$30's worth, considering that there'd be almost no positive effect of making this test cost more I can't see the point.
Soft roaders represent an excellent compromise between the needs of the hardcore 4x4 user and the convenience of a city hatchback. Its clear to see why they have become so popular in todays society.

actually, considering the massive difference crap tyres and shocks make to a car's braking ability, I'd dispute this.

this I agree with, the pink slip process works just fine all things considered.

Personally I'd rather see a hardness test performed on tyres as well as checking tread depth. a rock hard 30yo michelin X with heaps of tread is just as deadly in the dry as a near bald Pirelli Drago in the wet.

These rustbuckets (including my old Camry I had b4 I sold it) should have been taken off the road and scrapped. It had worn shocks, saggy springs, warpped rotors, blowing a tiny bit of smoke etc and very hairy at 150 clicks. I didn't say all old cars should be off the roads but maintenance should be under closer scrutiny.

Yeah, but remember you're not supposed to be travelling at 150 ... and if there were roads where 150 was allowable, then it's "a driver stupidity" issue if you're going that fast.

But wouldn't you say that it's Driver Stupidity that's the main cause; because if you're in a crappy car (or a 4WD) then you should be driving accordingly?
