where was all this info when i had to do an assignment on "Are speed Cameras Revenue Raisers?"

not that i didnt bring it all up anyway.

and the flip-side to the air vs. land comment.
when we drove to the goldcoast from melbourne, we choose to take our car because we wanted to use one up there. sure, the drive was boring in places, but it sure beat hiring a car. and with regards to spending time up there. we were on the goldcoast for about 3 weeks. catching a plane meant that we would've had to pay for more accomodation anyway.

    meh, it'll never happen.

How about instead of punishing most motorists who drive in a responsible manner and obey the law they make a better plan of driver training and education?

Also i think they should adopt a power restriction on say under 25 drivers. How many high powered skylines and supras do you see with p plates on them? I know this will annoy a lot of people but really, think about it novice drivers dont have any driving experience or skills to handle powerfull cars.

I think all this crap about speeding and road tolls is crap. Its quite obvious that speed traps and cammeras dont work, that basically they are seen as cash cows and cause huge resentment by the public.

It really doesn't take that much skill or car control not to flex the right foot, you can get yourself into a shitload of trouble with a gutless Corolla, and what happens if you're a student & the family car is already a Falcon? I suppose you could set the limit (preferably in kW/kg) to something ridiculously high, but that would basically make very little difference 'cos it would affect so few people; the problems are usually with people acting like dicks, and you can act like a dick in just about anything ...

Carcrazy maybe a Hp limit for P platers would be more of a workable thing... However how do you judge such a thing?

Carcrazy what if you're a P plater and wanna drive Dad's new commy down the shops

              ---

Urban speed limits of 40/50/some 60 have a point! They're the only speed limits in the country that have an effect on saving lives! People should be more careful around houses where kids etc could be playing someone runs out onto the street etc

But wide / decent roads it's a joke .... Technology has always evolved to allow us to travel FASTER not slower! It's about now that you really have to think what other actions should be taken in regards to safety which are NOT already being taken!

If urban speed limits of 50km/h have a point, how come they have no positive effect? School zones I have no real problem with, except that there shouldn't be as many ... sorry, but if a child decides it's going to run across a 6-lane divided road that SHOULD be a 70-zone, we don't need it in the gene-pool.

One of the dumbest things my mates and I have ever done:

Morris Minor, 3 on board, light traffic, 60km/h zone and we topped 100km/h (downhill). Stupid yes, but at least I would have died laughing :p

I concur Forg.. 50 zones are a waste of time.. 85% of people drive at 60 in them anyway... I know I do unless I know it's a revenue

School zones are by and large a joke too- esp the ones on major arterial roads. If you can't cross at lights, or the school crossing with the little man who stops the traffic by the time your 6 too damn bad.

                      [/jumps on old timers soapbox]

In my day we didn't have school zones at all. Noone I went to school with (and I went to 10 different schools in 2 states), nor anyone they knew either, got hit, killed or in anyway injured on their way too or from school.. one kid did get hit crossing a main road on a weekend, but she was a fat kid and couldn't run, so too damn bad again..

                      [/old timers soapbox] :D

I'm actually fully in favour of the horsepower and speed limitting. I'd like to go one step further than automatic license suspension for speeding, instead I propose that if caught speeding, the offender should be dragged out of the car and shot three times in the face. The offenders assets should then be liquidated and the funds put towards more 'safety enforcement officers' to patrol the roads catching the other reckless lunatics who threaten our lives by speeding.

I also propose similar capital punishment for anyone
                        • who causes any tyre to exceed the limits of the traction envelope at any time
                        • who is found with stereo equipment installed in any car, shop, house, boat or office
                        • who is found with non-standard components fitted to a car, motorcycle, bicycle, wheelchair, plane or other vehicle. Including such parts as wheels, brake pads, tyres, fluids (including but not limited to oil, petrol and coolant), seat covers, wiper blades, gases (including but not limitted to those contained within the tyres and air conditioning).
                        • who talks, motions or in any other way communicates with another human being whilst inside or within 200 metres of a motor vehicle and or public roadway.
Don't worry, thats just the self-preservation instinct, in my experience you can safely ignore it.

Rowdy you'll agree though people should pay better attention... I personally dont' think 40 makes a great deal of difference to 60 if people would just pay attention around schools / houses...

Actually how has the general populous of soccer mum's in land barge's had an effect on little kids lives!

The only times I've heard about kids being killed around school zones is when they get driven over by people in 4wd's

It's all a big circle aint it - it's all the same old problems that link together but no-one does crap about it!

Hotgemini, I think your idea should be expanded; it should also cover anyone who tries to buy or use: cigarettes, any alcoholic beverage, anything with artificial sweetener, anything with added sugar, anything that has an above-a-level-defined-by-panel-of-doctors % of fat, anything that is sharp, anything that could be used for elevating one's self above ground level, and anything that can conduct electricity.
