As far as getting a ticket from a copper in the ACT after driving past them (without being pulled over) its highly unlikely, having worked there myself I rekon Ive got at least 100+ peoples details in notebooks that I did stop and probably should get a ticket but the CBF factor is too high and most just fall between the cracks. The vans are just run by contractors and they are pricks but as far as I know the range on the camera isnt terribly good so you should be right.

Another thing that saves a lot of fines is whether the set up is being used on auto or manual. If the operator is shooting people on manual, the chances of getting booked are a lot less. And being a totally boring job, manual is what their being used with the most. His best fine was some punter at 186KMH on the Monaro hwy one night. He advised me to get a slim line black number plate. The quote was "unreadable"
do you know if they were paid incentives for booking people or a flat rate?

I went through one about a month back doing around 85 in a 70 zone. The signs on the roof of the van were saying its a 60 zone... went back a little later and they had changed the signs to 70. I never got a ticket :D

I was just driving over a hill on Hindmarsh Drive in an 80 zone behind a driver going about 70. I followed for a while, then decided to overtake. I overtook the driver and must've sped up to about 90 and only then saw the speed van about 80 or so metres away. I was thinking because it was peak hour and a fair few cars around that the camera may have been targeted elsewhere or something... Since it wasn't my car I'm just a little antsy about it. What are the chances of me being caught?

With a bit of luck with all the traffic around you should be right. Been in a similar situation myself a few times and not got a van camera fine yet.

From what I'm lead to believe they only track one lane only, and are only good for up to about 70m. ... This was told to me by a copper, .. hopefully its true

The best way to sort them is take some friends with you. One talks to the operator as a distraction while the other 2 crawl around the outside of the car and remove his plates. When you leave, fit the plates to your car and go past the camera numerus times and ridiculous speeds! Thats revenue raising ; )

BTW, I didn't get done from the original post back in 04. Looks like they only get you from close up or I wasn't enough over the limit. Either way, I am not complaining.

I think in ACT they have an unofficial 10% tolerance so if you are doing 109 in the 100 zone you should get away with it.

From what I was aware the cameras when manually operated which they are, only do a single vehicle at a time. In automatic they are capable of more, but are never run that way?

I've not once been done by a van despite going through a few 10km/h over and a few short brake efforts very close to them of the same overspeed.

I used to do that when I had a pair of Cibies with 100w globes mounted above the plate. Funny how they now take the photos from behind at night now.
