California bans new internal combustion engines, starting in 2035

    https://arstechnica.com/cars/2020/09...missions-free/

On Wednesday, California Governor Gavin Newsom signed an executive order requiring that all new passenger cars and trucks sold in the state from 2035 be zero-emissions vehicles. Additionally, all drayage trucks—the ones that move containers around at places like the Port of Los Angeles—must also go emissions free by this date, as well as off-road vehicles and equipment. Medium- and heavy-duty vehicles get an extra decade to comply, but by 2045 these too must ditch internal combustion engines.

We should note that California's ban will only apply to new gasoline- or diesel-powered vehicles sold in the state after it goes into effect. Cars and trucks already on the road and registered before 2035 will remain road-legal.

Will you need to really ban it by then?

I expect by that stage it will have naturally evolved to the point the ban would be pointless

It will likely be pointless by then but given the fact it’s only an executive order which any future governor in the next 15 years can reverse by simply writing a few sentences on a piece of paper it doesn’t really matter either. But cue people getting really upset.

People with modified cars (and money) just registered their cars in Montana (who give zero fucks) under a $2 company name.

This. I'm envisaging that by 2035 the only cars still powered by fossil fuels will be specialised things (ie some enthusiast cars, maybe still some commercial vehicles) and really cheap stuff made for emerging markets. You'd expect by then battery and electric motor technology will be at the point where your average punter will happily drive an electric car, and so will most of us.

This brings California into line with the UK's plan for 2035.

I agree with the above sentiments though, that most new cars will be electric by then, with just us old dinosaurs still employing the suck, squeeze, bang, blow method.

Y'know, the first thing that occurred to me was that probably the only car manufacturer in CA is Tesla ...
Soft roaders represent an excellent compromise between the needs of the hardcore 4x4 user and the convenience of a city hatchback. Its clear to see why they have become so popular in todays society.

Their state is most fucked by climate change, so no wonder... it'll happen. In 15 years Trump, Biden and all his ilk will be dead so the world will move forward a lot quicker.

You would think ICE would all be done in 15 years but I'm not sure. If we have the same improvements in batteries that we have had in the last 15 (price and performance) there is still going to be a lot of demand for non thirsty econo mobiles and of course at the other end of the range I can hardly imagine the Ferrari V12 will be dead??

Everyone is buying a 4wd Yaris this week for 40k. Gunna be long time before a fun thing like that is electric, and at that price, and weight, with endurance. . . . .
