might be worthwile running the numbers to work out the top speed in second gear for a number of cars, camry, magna (think auto) etc as well as the 328 of course
might also be helpful to point out the "thrust" of some p[opular turbo diesal 4WD's as well, just imagine all that thrust let loose around the schools come 3:00pm
I feel as if the "100km/h in 2nd" thing is being taken slightly out of context.. it was the Courier Mail who wrote that in a half-hearted attempt at journalism as opposed to Mr Scruby.
the 328 would reach over 200 easily and im sure his car would make it to the australian legal limit in 2nd like most other cars on the road.
Scruby maybe be many things, ignorant, bigotted and aright twat.
But he's not stupid.
Undoubtedly he's suckin' off the public teat to fund his Mosman living, BMW driving arse...
oh yeah...
The great google says:

Wasn't the only car if not one-of, sold in Australia, that couldnt hit 100km/h in a month of Sundays the venerable Niki FSM? If so, we should petition Scruby to swap his Western European cruiser for the eastern european somethingorother :p
There is only one basic human right, the right to do as you damn well please. And with it comes the only basic human duty, the duty to take the consequences.
When buying and selling are controlled by legislation, the first things to be bought and sold are legislators.
Sheriff Buford T. Justice: "SHUDDUP, ONE SHIT AT A TIME!"
Lol - the Adelaide Advertiser gave this goose a run on a tiny article on page 14, but referred to the car as the Ford Tycoon! Don't know any Fords by that name...
They didn't mention the Pedestrian Council by name, just referred to them as "the safety lobby", but it didn't take too much lateral thinking to work out which bonehead was behind all this...
In 1986, Scruby allegedly drove his Mercedes into a jogger. He was acquitted of a charge of wanton driving after the magistrate blamed the jogger.
Friends say a pleasant lunch or coffee with Scruby is likely to be disrupted when he leaps up to accost a motorist who is double- parked or in a no-stopping zone.
Goeldner suggests parts of the media portray Scruby as an expert on all road safety issues.
"We should question both his motives and the appropriateness of the [PCA's] funding from the NRMA, NSW Motor Accident Commission and RTA of NSW. It is almost like the government is happy to cop some of his more outrageous outbursts as long as he leads the cheer squad for speed cameras and other draconian enforcement methods."
Scruby says he isn't anti-car (he now drives a BMW 3 Series).
perhaps ask the ICAC to look into his dealings with the RTA and NRMA, and/or request the PCA financial records through the freedom of info act.

this scruby guy sounds like a nutter who lives down the road from me. He lives on a 60km/h road and made his own pathetic 50km/h road signs and put them up on the stretch of road near his house. Till someone changed them to 80 and i think he was warned not to do it again by the authorities.
I've nearly killed him a few times because he steps out onto the road waving his fists at you even though you are doing 60. Meanwhile when he drives, he reverses his car out of his driveway as if he has to escape the gravitational pull of his garage and doesnt even bother to look if anyone is behind. Almost wiped me out once (if i was going 50 he would have wiped me out!)
People like these guys should be locked up in a very heavily padded cell and the key thrown away
FWIW if you nail his car while he's reversing he's automatically at fault and will have to pay for your new car.

A more recent article (Nov 04) puts Scruby behind the wheel of a Subaru Outback:
Harold Scruby, the anti-SUV activist, drives a soft-roader, a Subaru Outback that is yet to see a spot of dust. He acknowledges that SUVs are becoming safer and that come 2010, when their favourable tariff regime will cease, they should lose favour in the market.
Interesting choice of vehicle given the article is all about the problems caused by 4WDs in the city...
