There is a 170odd kw AWD version. They were the first to come out with the Tiger colour before every man and his dog with a Commodore bought one in that colour.

I dont know why people rate Stageas. Theyre basically a slower version of a GTST (not exactly a fast car when stock) in a much heavier and worse handling body. Yes you can get one with an RB26, but it would still be heavy and drive like the big car that it is.

I would pick the GT. Mods are cheap and with leather they don't look too bad. I prefer the look of the two tone early models though (ie before the facelift).

$20K should get a decent Holden Gemini , then you can choose between Panelvan or stationwagon.

Not my idea of a sports car but a ex fleet BA Falcon wagon should be round the 20K mark and has 182 kw (but are heavy and have questionable handling).

If I got a wagon I'd get a Liberty RS Wagon from '91 or whenever they came out. You could get it going really well for 20k, better than a forrester anyway.

Non-turbo 850's aren't too bad, 'cos they've only got Camryesque power & are relatively soft; they feel fairly solid on highways, but feel like the large soft FWD cars they are. Turbo ones, however, demand more of the chassis than the chassis is willing to deliver; the attempt to tie them down a bit basically ends up with something that feels too stiff on the road (ricers would probably claim they feel perfect) ... and they've still got the problem of channeling the sort of torque that comes with 180kW-odd of turbo power through the front wheels.
The V70R's did come out in AWD form for a while, and the auto allegedly hides the lag a bit; there was a 5spd AWD V70R available for one year (1997?), but being overpriced & unpopular & only available here for a year I've never read anything about what they're like to drive. I don't think any of the AWD models would be as little as $20k yet, though.
Soft roaders represent an excellent compromise between the needs of the hardcore 4x4 user and the convenience of a city hatchback. Its clear to see why they have become so popular in todays society.

I totally forgot about the Liberty RS wagon from the early 90's (until barM3 mentioned it). A friend use to have one and they were a good drive. It would be a challenge to find one in good condition with low klms though.

Good Rs libertys seem to be like rocking horse shit.

As the RS wagons are getting old, it is a shame that there are so few 2nd gen TT wagons around.
