They were considered lame compared to a GTR, basically. They really aren't that bad a car; but they're certainly not in demand, and while I've not browsed to that ad I wouldn't pay more'n $20k for one (mebbe $15k for a grey import).
Soft roaders represent an excellent compromise between the needs of the hardcore 4x4 user and the convenience of a city hatchback. Its clear to see why they have become so popular in todays society.

yeah - they were pretty lardy too weren't they? I thought I remembered reading that the main problem with them as a performance car was that their weight completely stuffed their handling and sand-bagged the performance.

Almost 1800kg if I remember correctly. Drove my mums one a few times, abit floaty at very high speeds... lots of torque though.

back in 1998 my mate cyrus had a fresh $60,000 bill in his pocket and a hankering for a new car, he loved the GTO, its pritty much what he wanted but he had never driven or sat in one. so we get to the car dealer and he opens the door of the gto, sits in it, looks around, says "fuck this" and went and bought a tt supra

i think the GTO just plain sucked, lets not go into the whys or whens, and agree it just sucked

The Yanks still do. Engines are very strong. Take a look at the 3S forum:

I reckon they are still one of the sexiest looking cars on the road. As far as performance goes, they are good for mid 13s stock, which is not bad considering the weight.(that is the later 6speed version)
Don't be a hoon. Join a car club and do it on the track.

maybe we could use the engine in something lighter? say a lancer? that would be kinda cool

Isn't the engine in the same family as the Magna V6? I'm curious why there haven't been any of these placed into a Magna, many parts are very very similar.

I had an amazing electrical fault with one of these a few months back, took a full day to find and solve, and as part of this I learned that the car really isn't as complicated as people make it out to be. Certainly no more complex than a 32 GTR. Sure they dont drive as nice as a GTR but fuck, like qiksilva3 said, they are one of the nicest cars visually to look at when they are just plain stock standard. I prefer the earlier models with popup lights rather than later ones with solid lights.

10 grand is a bargain, the biggest problem with them isn't there isn't enough of them so fewer people know about them.

looking at the interior it *could* be a genuine odo. But i'm sure there will be some probs down the track that could require another substantial investment, there's so many things that could go wrong as mentioned. but they do sound pretty sweet under load!

There are heaps of them in NZ, came in by the bucket load when the regs were looser than now, 18-20k is the usual price.

Mitsubishi use the same basic engine in all their large cars. The 3.0 litre is in Magnas and Pajeros. Some N/S, some transverse, some DOHC, some SOHC. It's just that people don't care for modding these cars.
