    The SN65 project car

"By removing the outside of the 03 rocker panels (just leaving the floor) and everything to the inside of the 65 rocker panels we were able to drop the 65 body over the 03 chassis. This left us with approx a 1" gap on both sides. We then had to fabricate some custom frame rails to "mate" the two cars together."

This link is all about a bloke in the states who is mating a '03 mustang platform to a '65 mustang body - Pictures included.

                  Hi T,

Thanks for the kind words. But in all actuality, I stopped measuring after about a foot or so.

Wish I had your budget mate :D

I'm glad to see you are keeping the IRS and not going with the usual American Gronk theme of removing all the technology in the car to replace it with 60's drag racing mechanicals.
Turns out, far too much has been written about great men and not nearly enough about morons

                      Hi S,

Actually, I'm a cheap bastard. Just ask any of the people I work with.

The budget for the car (parts and materials only) is about $50,000 U.S.

I know many who have dumped that much into a "normal" high performance, street machine build.

As far as the IRS goes... It seems to have a "slight" wheel hop problem (as set up from the factory). I am upgrading the bushings throughout and also modifying the geometry in an attempt to get every last drop of performance out of the unit. The ride will suffer a bit, but I am willing to put up with a few more bumps if I can eliminate the wheel hop issue.

                      Catch you later.

                          Hi M,

The rear wheels will "hop" under moderate to hard accelleration. Not only is it a pain the butt, but it is also quite damaging to the suspension and the drivetrain. The torque boxes on the passenger side were already starting to rip the spot welds free due to the repeated stress. And this occured after less than 5,000 miles.

                          Catch you later.

Do you have any adjustment in your shocks?

It seems that you have eliminated the 'give' in the original chassis, maybe you are exposing a weak link in the factory shocks?

Even the shock bushes could be a culprit - their hardness might be ok for a stock flexy shell, but you have stiffened it up beyond belief.

Love the detail work mate, I really think most people would fail to know how much time you have spent on every little piece. You could be and Aussie with that level of fab !!! But I can't see any fencing wire used.. if you ever come to Australia, you will be taught to use fencing wire for many, many jobs. Then you can fix anything in the middle of the bush (the outback) at night while pissed!! (Oh pissed means drunk here..)

                            Good stuff,

                              Hi M,

I am converting to a coil-over rear spring and shock setup. I really won't know how much better (or worse) things are till I get it back on the road.

As far as detail, most people don't realize how much effort people put in their cars. I have to believe that there are others even more detail orientated than I. After all, I am going for a "factory" look when complete. There are a world of sins that can be covered up with seam sealer and rubberized undercoating.

As far as being an Aussie, maybe one day, if I come up to snuff, I will achieve honorary Aussie status. I may not be all that accomplished with fence wire, but I am a real deamon with duct tape. We were at a friends house this summer, got really drunk (pissed) and went about duct taping everything in his house that wasn't already nailed down. We went through about 10 rolls of duct tape. It was funny at the time, but it must have taken him about a week to un-tape everything.

                              Here is my current update

                              Hi All,

Today, since I have gone as far as I can on the front aprons, I started roughing in the rear fender flares. My goal is to locate the top of the wheel openings at 26". That should place the opening along the same plane as the major body line (the top line of the side scallop) along the side of the car.

What a pain in the butt. I thought that you just located the flare on the side of the car and glued it in place and you were done.

                              Well...

if you want a solid finished product, you have to flare the quarter panel behind the FRP flare. Look at the photos and you will see what I mean. Again, this is as far as I can take it. A real bodyman has to do the finish hammer and dolly work and then finish the project off by welding all the tabs together.

                              Catch you later.
