sr20 is newer, bigger, more popular (good for resale/parts). Not to mention that the car itself comes with (slightly) less crappy brakes and turbo.

Seems like a pretty simple choice to me unless you cant afford the sr

It does sound like ass though.

they sound like balls AND ass.

      get an sr.

even if purely for resale value.
you may see a lot of ca's drifting - thats because they are cheaper.

Is it true that SR's suffer from oil starvation during spirited cornering due to a small factory oil capacity? Just something I was wondering about as I have seen it mentioned several times in internet discussions and wondered why the boffins at Nissan would build a motor with heaps of technology crammed into it and then stick a too small sump on it.

That could probably be said for alot of factory motors, they aren't designed for the G's that a modded car may pull on a track. Mine is fine and it gets thrown around quite alot but i make sure the oil is full every time i go on and i'd still like a winged sump for a bit of extra protection (not to mention oil capacity). I've heard the main problem may be over corners on crests, the oil lifting away from the pickup. Never had any indications of this happening with my motor though.
Oh yeah, with an exhaust, in my case 3" turbo back, hi flow cat, hotdog and N1 can it sounds fine, drop the exhaust tho (i've run just the dump on a mates 180sx) and the sound is reminiscent of a light diesel truck....

As above, a better idea would be to put aside the cash for a rebuild after you find one that is reasonably good.

what do you think about getting a non-turboed one for say 7-9k then spending 2-3k on rebuild and fitting a turbo on, or should i buy a turboed one for 10-13k and spend 1k rebuilding it...? im no sure...

excuse the figure, no idea whether they are correct...

                    figures are miles off

If you want a factory turbo setup then get that from the beginning, don't start with an N/a and move up.

If oin the other hand you're looking to build a response monster you can start with an N/a then simply strap the turbo to the side ("simply" probably isn't the best word but you get the idea). This retains the high comp of the n/a engine and while you will be limited powerwise as you can't run the boost it is a very fun setup to drive.

                      shadroth,

                      are your figures right here??
".......$7000 to $9000 then spending another $2000 to $3000 on rebuild?

                      turbo one for $10,000 to $13,000 ......"

i think you are shopping in the wrong store these prices are way way to expensive or you have used the wrong 'K' OR are you talking about a whole car?

an SR20det with 5 speed loom and ecu will set you back around $2200

um, yeah the figures were just guesses... but i was talking $7000 to $9000 for a half decent N/a s13 silvia with a sr20, and $10,000 to $13,000 for a turbo silvia...

If you only want to go as fast as a stock sr20det silvia then buy one straight up, I wouldn't waste the money putting on a kit if you can spend the money on getting one already done. If you want to go faster than a factory sr20det then I would buy a sr20de and build it from there. Don't buy stock parts to put onto a non-turbo... only spend money improving the engine, not making it standard like eveyone else's.

You know my opinion anyway. Prob see you later tonight...
