Hmm, If it was on gas would it just be a matter of taking it to the engineer and not needing an emission test? The car was built at Gas Research so maybe that is an option.

Would the power of the car suffer on LPG? I heard LPG wasnt as good as it was years ago due to funny mixes of propane and butane?

Straight gas wont help me here.

The EPA said ill still need to have the testing done to ensure it meets emissions.

The straight gas option is 'generally only good for converting cars that were originally carb fed'.

      Farken not happy!

as far as defects are concerned...
if a cop dont like how drive, hates your car or how you use the car .....he wil still give a defect...he wont care if it passes or not.

its just the inconveiniance hes causing you

          Hrmmm.

I would just have it tested the cheap way. Get it engineered and plated. Atleast if a cop does pull you over and says "Require emissions tests" just give him the paper work to read through for emissions tests you have had.

Keeping a copy in your glovebox will help.

Thats what i did on a car i upgraded the turbo and cooler on. Just had the engineers in the glove box stating still meets all ADR's etc etc etc. No hassles. Apart from to loud.

Okay well there is more news on my doings now.

I have spoken with the mechanic mentioned above and he has passed an engineers report doing it the cheap way.

All he had to do was find a dyno with an exhaust gas analyser which a lot of mechanics have and tune to it meet the required emissions. Then you get the mechanic to sign a stat dec saying that it was this car on this day and it meets these emissions.

Apparantly this should satisfy an engineer and the epa. He has done this before and passed a vicroads enginerrs report with flying colours.

Im going to speak with his engineer today and see how we go!

            Ill keep you all updated.

            Cheers

I've heard of the same thing being done in NSW.

Personally I think you are going about this arse about.

First you need to speak with Vicroads, who (if they are like the RTA) are likely to direct you to speak with either their technical department or tell you to discuss your situation with a signatory.

You then need to find out what emissions test the said signatory/tech dept is happy to accept as proof that emissions requirements will continue to be met.

Then you need to find out who can provide the above test.

I wouldn't be accepting the word of your tuner as gospel - Technical information should come from either Vicroads or their tech representatives (ie signatories). It is these people's jobs to understand and interpret the modification rules.

And then once you have found out what you need to do to be 100% undisputably legal, you can decide whether this is worthwhile when compared against other alternatives which will get you out of trouble 99% of the time.

I have done that. The official test costs $3000 regardless if I pass or fail. If I fail it costs another $3000 to take the test again. The test is done and certificate 'only' recognisable if its certified by emissions labs at ford, toyota or Vipac ( a private company) It must meet ADR 37.

The test varies from $3000-$4000. All engineers so far are telling me the same thing, that I need to have it done there.

I have since tried to contact the engineer my tuner was talking about but he is no longer in business.

What shits me is the fact if they get you for emissions they wont send you to the testing station for any $3000 test. They will most likely if at all test it on a gas analyser on a dyno at most.

If the test only requires passing a gas analyser then why must I spend $3000 on a totally different test to tell me the same thing? Farken EPA!

So you have been given the same answer from several places? I don't see the point of your continued argument then?

I have since tried to contact the engineer my tuner was talking about but he is no longer in business.
So maybe a dodgy engineer has gone out of business?

The EPA roadside test is most likely only a coarse test designed to catch people who have really farked up their emissions. The ADR test is likely to be a much more comprehensive test designed to impose certain standards on car manufacturers and modifiers. I'd think its possible to pass the EPA test but still fail the ADR test.

IMO you should either go the whole hog (ie ADR test) or do nothing until you actually have to (ie you get defected). I don't see any point in wasting money on tuning and tests and certificates that don't really mean anything.

I agree, it would have been nice to stick it up a cop and not have to worry about getting pulled over though. I am always worrying with my current car.

The other benefit would have been I could have got full comp insurance and be properly covered if an accident occured.

Thanks for your help guys, Im picking up the car in about an hour.

Are there really legality issues related with farting in Victoria?
Soft roaders represent an excellent compromise between the needs of the hardcore 4x4 user and the convenience of a city hatchback. Its clear to see why they have become so popular in todays society.
