I don't know how the owners of the real 4wds, eg Cruisers and Patrols, can resist taking them off the beaten track. I'd last about an week before heading bush.

What's the problem with 4WD's ??

Having owned 3x 4wds the only problem I have is that in Australia we don't get the really big motherfuckers Like Lincon Navigators and H2 Hummers.
Even my old Rangie needed to be bigger and have more road presence at times. If you drive a small car and the big cars worry you then I suggest you trade up in size.
(I say this slightly as a joke/slightly not as a joke)
Seriously, a decent (like a Rangie) 4wd drive is 4 cars in one and you can never have enough room, or towing capacity in car..

Yep! :DOriginally posted by FatBoySweet. So it's a given that we ban WRX's, EVO Lancers, SS Commodores, all Falcons and the odd Porsche too ??
After all, they don't NEED powerful V8's or turbo engines do they ?? Surely that's a case of "Mine is bigger than yours..."
In case you didn't realise - I was joking Paul

what caused the impact wiseguy... point is, people don't know how to control a car in an adverse situation, or even how to identify an adverse situation. by the time they have lost control it's too late and they will either kill the, selves or someone else. prevention is the key, not knee-jerk "cures".Turns out, far too much has been written about great men and not nearly enough about morons

Yes Secoh but why give people a bigger stick to kill people with?
I don't like 4x4 because they are big and get in my way. As a minority like they were 10 years ago I had no problem with them. I like the actual cars but I don't like the amount of them on the roads.
Obviously there are the environmental impacts of having such big wasteful cars on the road as well.
I don't think anyone that has use for a 4x4 should be stopped from buying one but I also don't think they should be something accessible to the general populous.
I don't think government regulation would fix it very much with out punishing those that really need these things and their abilities.
Basically what needs to happen is they need to be made unpopular so the wankers that buy them for show will stay away.
Our road culture needs to change in several big ways and I think we need to look to Europe for the direction to head in.
We need a culture that focus's on the efficiency and handling abilities of cars not the size and amount of chrome that can be fitted.
Basically as with a lot of things we need to stop being a little America.
Perhaps high petrol prices are a good thing?

Other than roobars/bullbars I have no problem with 4wds.
Roobars, IMO, are a dangerous addition to any vehicle that will spend 95%time being driven within a metro area.
Not sure how you would address this issue reasonably. Perhaps they could ban dealerships from fitting a roobar on a new car, if people are detemined to get them they could do it aftermarket.

Just blame Taxi drivers - everyone already thinks they suck arse! :pOriginally posted by Secoh4x4's are bad because we are not alowed to pick on Asian drivers any more, and people need someone to hate and blame their inadequacies on.
On the positive for 4WD's - most of them are diesel and even though it's a "dirty looking sooty fuel" it goes way longer on a tank & is cleaner compared to every 3+yo car that doesn't get it's catalytic converter replaced. My mate's TD Pajero gets better economy than my wife's lancer for instance - and I bet there's benzine pouring outa the '00 lancer.XLII - 101010 - 2AOriginally posted by Jimat the last place there was a few ocassions where you'd go into the toilets (office environment mind you) and there'd be a length of brown cable in front of the shitter. But then you get the argument that bullbars will prevent damage to the fourbies in low-speed bingles...I take photos of shiny things with wheels. www.rohanphillips.com

Wow - i know of an accident in my local area where a small Charade hit a kid on a bike and killed them - what do we ban first ?? Charades or kids on bikes ??Originally posted by Swifty GTiI always knew you'd turn the stereotype back onto the hatchback driver - it's not the first time.
Doesn't help the girl in the charade who was killed on the Spit bridge by a 4wd which veered into the oncoming lane.
By the way, i've never seen a soccer Mum doing 80 or 90km/h through the main street of a busy shopping area with the doof doof pumping, arm out the window, seat rolled back, and P plate hanging from the car. Seen it plenty of times from small hatchback drivers though, so tell me again how 4WD's are so bad and always in the wrong again ??
My point (in case you missed it) was that cars don't often kill people - poor drivers usually do...
Obviously there are environmental impacts of having BOV's and modified tunes / aftermarket ECU's etc, but i don't see you calling for them to be banned ?? Why ??Originally posted by carazyObviously there are the environmental impacts of having such big wasteful cars on the road as well. And is a turbo diesel 4WD thirstier than a 5.7 V8 ?? I think not...
Yeah, i figured as much Chris, but i couldn't help responding...Originally posted by SnottyGSRIn case you didn't realise - I was joking Paul

Ive just changed from an SV8 to a petrol Prado Auto. The prado does most things the sv8 did - use lots of petrol, comfy, they stop very well ( even better than a commy with shit std brakes ). I dont consider it any more dangerous than the sv8 - in fact the opposite - I am driving much more sedately in the prado than i ever did in the sv8. BTW i bought it for work as im a country real estate agent that sells rural property. Now without LS1........again!

FatBoy, if you want to buy a 4x4 just buy the damn thing! I'd hazard a guess that you are a better driver than a fair few of the aforementioned "soccer-mums" and your usages seem more legitimate.
May I say, that with the increasing numbers of urban 4WDs, I tend to think that most of them would be the petrol variant, and hence have a big engine tasked with lugging around 2+ tonnes of vehicle, so would be more wasteful than your 5.7 V8 example, not to mention slower, more of a pain in the arse for other road users etc etc.Originally posted by klampykixxas an example, an elephant pushes over a tree to eat the fresh leaves at the top, but a human isnt allowed to build a machine that makes a car so he can drive around to places quicker?

Haha I love it when people bring up the 'environmental' issue relating to 4WDS
What a fuckin joke, if you were really worried about pollution, you'd ride a bike or buy a Prius, not a performance car :p
End of the day, y'all need something better to pick on :D
