    Paul,

    Firstly, you drive like a soccermom, so :p

    But seriously, I can see the arguments for an against.
    But I live in the Upper North Shore.....yeah, not just the North side, but the upper one where we have streets with multi-million dollars houses (without harbour views FFS). There's a ton of soccermoms around here that I've had near misses with. 4WDs, hatchbacks, Falcadores etc. You name it, I've had to avoid it. So yeah, bad driver syndrome. Along with the cockface who decided it was cool to drive at 60kmh in a 70kmh zone in the right lane this morning with his arm hanging out of his Rangie - fuck you buddy :p

    4WDs are not safer than a passenger car IMHO. I personally know someone who was driving their Pajero out country on a gravel road, slid on some loose stuff, and the car rolled. His 4 year old son died in the acco. Police reckoned that had he been in a normal car, it most likely would not have rolled due to the lower CofG. His wife has never gotten over the loss of her boy, even now, 10 years later.

    4WD owners should be made to pass a driving test in a 4WD IMHO. Parking the mofo, reverse parking it, changing lanes safely in it... etc etc. Those who have a modicum of driving skill will pass it no wuckers. Those who don't, shouldn't be behind the wheel of one. I drove my uncles RAV4 (yeah, I know it's not a 'real' 4WD), and reverse parking the thing was crazy because I couldn't see shit of the car behind me. Lucky for me he had reverse park sensors, but seriously, without them, I'd have been fucked. I don't consider myself a bad driver, but if I'm struggling to park a fucking Rav4 at first, WTF are soccermoms going to do? There's plenty of people who have trouble jumping from a small/medium car to a large family car.... what happens when they get behind the wheel of a truck? Do they expect it to handle as well as their Corolla/Vectra/Falcadore? Most likely...

    Erm, okay, what was the point? Oh yeah. FatBoy drives like a Soccermom.... :D

      FB's just shit stirring, he's going to get the 4X whatever. Now if he was a really keen race driver the extra money would be going on the car, the tow vehicle wouldn't really matter :D

      Is it just me or has the general standard of 4X driving improved the last year or so? Most of them are even managing to park sort of properly

            Yes, my uses are more legitimate, but no, i'm not sure i'm any better at steering than your average soccer mum... :D

            I'll no doubt buy the farking thing anyway, it's only a matter of time as i'm in the middle of building a house atm - i was just curious to see peoples thoughts after reading that other thread that's all...

            Nath - At least i remember what it's like to drive on the track... :p

            Richard - Meh, fuck the race car. It's just a money pit. I usually run out of talent after a few corners and can't win races so i might as well have a flash tow car to attract the groupies i am yet to find... :D

            Muz - Speak up fark ya !!

            P.S - Here's the nugget i'm looking at buying -
            http://www.nissan.com.au/navaradual/...4x4_str_dc.asp

            Not bad for just over 40k on road. Can tow 2,800 kgs as well. That price includes the necessary towbar as well as a bullbar so i can run down small vehicles on a regular basis...

              You're doing a great job Fat Boy

              But no ones mentioned the best thing about a big 4wd.

              That is when you have a pimple faced snotty nosed kid in his riced up roller skate (with the doof doof thing happening ) darting in and out of traffic like a crazed loony, you just bump him out of the way and get on with your day :D (insert sarcastic tone :rotflol: )
              I can't think of anything clever to write in here...so just make something up yourself.

                it's the safety thing that's associated with 4x4s. they think they're safer, they feel high and more powerful. and therefore a lot of the time they drive accordingly (like they're indestructable).

                eg.
                it's lovely having a 4x4 squeezing you in your lane while the driver tells the kids off for making noise on their gameboy on her way dropping the older son to soccer, not realising you're there because she's too high up to see your car.

                not only in the above example would she likely see your car had she been driving a lower height vehicle, but she would feel less superior and more vulnerable and therefore be more careful about running into someone.

                sure trucks and buses have a similar problem - so they have extra licensing requirements!

                similarly i dont have a problem with having to get an extra license to own a vehicle with a certain power/height ratio, or towing a trailer, or other similar circumstances.

                note: i've been a passenger in a 4x4 in an example similar to the above

                  OK to be completely honest, the thing that scares me about Urban Assault Vehicles is the lack of rearvision- way too many kids get run over by cars in driveways, and although I don't have the numbers, commonsense dictates that the rear visibility is worse in these high and large vehicles.

                  I'll bet after you kill your child owning a big 4wd looks to make a bit less sense.

                    Muz fair point.....but my Rangie had 1000x better rear vison than a VT commode sedan...it was even safer that it hardly ever ran so the chance of actually moving under its own steam was remote

                      Yeah I know there are plusses to owning Range and Land Rovers. Umm, no i don't... :D

                      I just felt like being overly dramatic. Must be all the girls on PF these days...

                        They block your vision on the road, take up so much space in the car parks.

                        I think you should have to justify reason for owning such a vehicle, and also require extra licensing.

                        They are big tanks, not needed on urban roads.

                        Might seem narrow minded, but its the truth in my eyes :D

                          Phew, i knew there was a reason i don't have kids. (Well, none that i know of)

                          On a serious note that would be absolutely tragic and yes, it's a good point that vision may be a little worse than a normal sedan. However if a kid is small enough to not know to move away from a car he's probably small enough not to be seen from inside a Falcodore either...

                          I'd also question the parenting skills of those who allow kids to play behind cars, and yes, i realise accidents happen but geez, wouldn't you check where your kids are ??

                            RB30-POWER: You have the right to that opinion, no doubt, but nobody has answered FatBoy's comment - why should people who want 4WDs require justification for their purchases, but people who want sports cars can do what they want?

                            Can't have two rules...

                              The only problem I have is some owners who give bullshit reasons for buying them like "we need the space" or "the visibility is really fantastic". If these wankers honestly expect people to believe they just dropped $80k on something that gets 300km to 100 litres of petrol and doesn't fit in their garage so they can see three cars ahead of them, then they really are as stupid as they look. If you want interior space, buy a fucking van. If they said "I bought it because it looks tough", "to tow my boat" or "to impress neighbours/colleagues/friends" then good on them.

                              Personally, I wouldn't buy one because:
                              * They're slow
                              * They look like shit
                              * They handle like shit
                              * They get about 4mpg
                              * etc
                              "They say 60% of the time, it works every time."

                                They are slow ?? Hmmm, have you driven a Patrol or Prado lately ?? They'd hose a few unsuspecting road users. But i digress, you don't buy a 4WD to run at the drags...

                                The looks thing is subjective. If you find a turbo VL Calais appealing i think we can deduce that you have taste in your arse...
