Ah yes, the big yank pickup.

Also the victim of choice for rebel fighters armed with RPG's and machine guns all the world over. They are big, drink alot of fuel, have fuck all mobility and might as well be carrying a giant sign saying "come hit me with everything you got because I'm a tool with a flashy tank".

I did read your post, and my argument is actually defending you. It's people like yourself, who actually USE a 4x4 to do 4x4 needing things (towing a racecarboat) that I'm totally fine about. I'm arguing against the people who don't need a 4x4 and buy one anyway.

        Your towing, your going offroad.

Sounds like a valid reason to me, you justified why you are getting one.

But a high percentage of 4x4 owners, don't use their vehicles for these purposes, therfore they do little for other road users and there is no real requirement for vehicles of this size/nature. These are the people we want to petition against and get off the road or out of such vehicles. :D

Is now a good time to mention that we own a 1992 Mitsubishi Pajeo SWB.

I use it to run over babies, cats, dogs, flower gardens, park in at least two car spots at once, drive too slowly in the right lane, and I'll be buggered if I know where the indicators are.

When was the last time your peaceful night was shattered by some wanker in a sportscar with the doof doof happening ?? How many times does some spastic with an over-inflated opinion of his cars prestige park in the middle of TWO spots just to ensure he doesn't get any parking dents ??
Well, I don't live anywhere near the rocksr or Krispy Kreme at Penriff, so I can't say they bug me much. More to the point, its not usually sports cars with "teh doof doof", moreover its some loaded down Excel with the seat wound all the way back and some 17 year old jerkoff trying to see over the dash. Oh and i've NEVER seen a sports car across two spaces in a parking lot. Ever. Hardly seen anyone do that.

ox!gen - I don't see people whinging about trucks though ?? Surely they are a bigger concern, what with massive weights, poor brakes and shit handling ??
Truck drivers have to pass licensing requirements over and above those of yer average soccer-mum, do they not?

I did drive one, just last week. I was surprised just how "car like" the turbo diesel Navara was to drive. Felt comfortable, and great on fuel too...
Last 4WD I drove was a 2002 model Turbo Diesel Hilux, and if its anything to go by, your version of "car like" differs somewhat from mine. Shit handling, feck-all power, a ride that could make you sea-sick if you were in the passenger seat... I could go on.

I intend racing interstate next year, and i'll be farked if i'm driving an old truck 1,000kms and back just because a few softcocks on a forum think a 4WD is bad news...
Then DO IT! Jeebus, 'sif our opinions matter anyway!

At night its lights won't blare right into your back window etc.
                    No,BUT

We also have to put up with these wankers (in sports cars mainly mind you) that insist on driving around with fog lights on all the time, they dont seem to concerned about anyones safety whilst blinding other traffic do they?

As for the sheer number of 4X4 on the road,i cant recall the last time i had a near miss/notable incident with one but can rattle of plenty caused by "normal cars" (Before you judge,i drive a 1997 camry conquest!)

Im waiting for people to start scrutinizing (sp?) people in utes that never seem to have a payload in the back or people with all wheel drive not using vehicles as intended

                    christ, what next fellas?

i think you've justified enough to buy one Fatboy. so what is the problem? there isn't anything wrong with having some 4x4's on the road, heck i even have family members that drive 'em! but its the increasing numbers that is getting annoying.

the main gripes i have with 4x4's and other softroaders mainly centres around the fact that it's harder to see around them in traffic, and my relative lack of faith with some of the driver's abilities in said 4x4's & softroaders.
along with this, a lot of people rate the "high driving position" as one of the most endering attributes of their softroader of choice, which i find to be a very selfish attitude. a bit like a tall fat guy standing in front of someone shorter in a crowd.

We all know there are people of questionable driving ability out there. Some of us contributers here would fall under that category too no doubt.

I believe that these people would be less likely to have accidents in regular cars due to the better handling and stopping abillities. If they need a large vehicle they should look at station wagons or Taragos.

That aside, bad drivers will have accidents no matter what they drive. When this occurs I'd much rather be hit by a 1.5 Tone commodore wagon then a 2.5tone 4x4. I know basic physics, heavier objects hurt more.

From the experience of friends who have bought 4wds. Most buy one, take it off road 2 -3 times in the first year of ownership. They then break something or find that a standard 4x4 is pretty crap at 4x4ing. The costs of repairs or upgrades then mean the car never see's dirt for the rest of their ownership.

haha, this thread is just great...

Can't imagine where it will be up to when i return in 24 hours time.

Out of interest, did anyone read the article discussing this issue in the NRMA Open Road a few issues back? Seemed like they were fairly keen to get them of the roads?
