How is it in his interest to cut himself off from potential sales?
It comes back to Subaru's strategy to have a 'drivers line of cars' ie liberty, impreza etc and a 'recreation' line of cars ie outback and forester.
There are a few reasons why they won't come and from what I have gathered the main ones are:
1) Since the Forester is classified as part of the recreation line the intent would be to have them appeal to the family type and not have them on the front page of the newspaper after being involved in a car jacking, ram raid etc. Comes back to branding I guess.
2) For such a low volume it would be reasonably expensive to stock the associated parts, especially considering that it is a 2.5 litre turbo (but some of the parts may be the same as the Forester XT - Smellytofu??)
3) Most sales would probably come from the impreza Sti and the Forester XT so it is not really bringing new customers to the brand.
Maybe he is thinking that a STI Forester will take sales away from the Imprezza STI but could be some other reason. Maybe he is another John Economos al la Toyota.
Maybe instead of being so closed minded and protectionist, he might actually consider that it would open up a market of new buyers, who might not have previously considered buying a Impreza WRX Sti?

As they say here, STi is one fifth of bugger all. (not even two fifths)

Either way, I want one.
Being closed minded and a protectionist is how that guy keeps himself in a job. If he was to say 'bring them in' and pay for compliancing/stocking the parts, training their mechanics on what to/what not to do etc, and Subaru sell bugger all of them (or pilfer sales from the XT or WRX) do you think he would still have a job?
Im trying to think of a competitor to the STi Forester that it could take sales away from....anyone have a thought?
I have seen a few private STi Forester imports, nice cars!

Impreza STi for one... Liberty GT & 3.0R-B wagon for another but get back to what dodgyd said in his last post. I agree they should bring them in but I can understand their point of view too.

And my counter-argument to your counter-argument is that he would have the opportunity to sell even more cars than he does now, and hence enhance his job prospects.
Until such a time as if/when such a product arrives, any argument is obviously pure speculation and nothing more.
why would they care if people bought these over a Forester XT? That would be strange logic to me... "Don't bring in the top model, we want to sell the cheap ones"
