I thought there was an unofficial 160km/h limit for emergency vehicles?
(In QLD I mean, I would assume other states would be similar)

At the end of the day, he didn't kill or maim anyone, but - like it or not - he was placing himself and others at a significant risk, regardless of his previous driving history, car or anything else. .

Can you extrapolate on that statement ? Because I think its bollocks.
That's the media and the police talking.
Any speed over the prescribed limit is a 'risk'.
If you're doing 125 in a 110 zone, that is a 'risk'.
231km/h is moreso.
I take it that the risk is the much shortened reaction times and braking distances.
You saw what happened when the 'gamble' did not pay off with that guy in the 360 Modena in the other thread.
Be that as it may... I'm a fan of 'no harm, no foul' and I don't think anything but a nominal fine is warranted here or on any highway speeding charge.

I drive that road quite often and even at 3am it is still reasonably busy. I think he is stupid though, there is always a speed camera on the federal highway, so serves him right.
230km/hr is a definate risk to other drivers, just pulling out on to the road from any of the side streets, rest areas etc will be difficult. You can't see if a car is going over twice the speed limit if it is coming straight at you.
Hmm so he has a 15 yr long history of speeding, but he's still alive. Doesn't that tend to prove something along the lines of speed doesn't kill? I wonder if the defence could have played on the fact that he wasn't endangering the public as he's been doing this for 15 years and is still ok? Unless of course he's CAUSED accidents but we don't know for sure whether he has or hasn't.

True, but if he had been smart and slowed down to a more reasonable pace when passing other cars (like I do) he wouldn't be in this situation. I say he got cocky and didn't stick to proper tactics.
