Didn't they actually race the things, in categories where there were also non-British cars?
Is driving a British car considered cheating; y'know, the whole Dick Dastardly oil-slick thing?
Soft roaders represent an excellent compromise between the needs of the hardcore 4x4 user and the convenience of a city hatchback. Its clear to see why they have become so popular in todays society.
I think a Fiat 1500 could be a pretty good thing for NB. ~950kgs at road weight, nice Colloti four speed column (the rules allow you to change it to a 124 floor shift four speed Colloti), 3 pot front calipers, big finned aloy drums, double wishbone front end... Kev Woolich's old 1500 still runs every now and then up here, it is apparently the longest running historic car in Aus.
Bang for buck I thing the RX2 would be the best bet for Nc.
vauxhaul viva!
humber super snipe! *giggle*
Nissan Cedric!

Ford Anglia? Pretty light, I think one model (Anglia Super 107E, IIRC) ran either the 1200 or 1500 pre crossflow ford kent motor, there are plenty of bits to make those go hard, and most of what applies to cortinas applies to Anglias. Would work for both Nb and Nc categories I think. aha, 737kg.
I just think a Datto 1200 could be a good option, you're talking a car with 700kg or less to lug around in stock form, that was raced in the Nc period, and I'd imagine between japanese tuners and local speedway people that A12 could be spun to 100-110hp or more which would be reasonable in that weight, particularly on short/tight tracks...The coupe has the front disc brakes too.
I've seen things you people wouldn't believe, and from this side only! The flight of a half-man, half-bird. Dinosaurs nuzzling their young in pastures where strip-malls should be. Cookies on dowels. All those moments lost in time; gone like eggs off a hooker's stomach. Time to die.

HB came out in '67-68 I think... Vauxhaul Viva came out around '64-65 I think?
Hillman Minx?

Doesn't an Austin A30 have all of 30hp?
Can it actually make it up hills with all of 22kW? :D
*edit*
Ooh, here's a pikky for a car-for-sale that arose from DCR's Completely-Fscked-Up-XJS thread:
You know you want to ... everybody wants to, it's a measure of their self-awareness as to whether they do or not ... :D

they still turn up from time to time and are pretty worthless, but still went ok for the time.

My Amazon would rip your Minxes' scrawny Pommy engine out through it's tailpipe & dump it's sump-contents down the gaping hole that resulted ... :D

vauxhaul viva WAS the first torana. The HB torrie was a facelifted Viva, and the LC/LJ based on the subsequent Viva model.
Forg, my Minx would never get caught by your lumbering bulldozer-esque amazon! :p

Triumph 2000 wouldnt be too bad, the 2 litre crank doesnt have the 6200rpm imbalance that the 2.5 cranks have and theyre lighter than mk2's. Handling and brakes arent too bad either and as Nero said, the works rally cars were running 160+hp. But really they might be a tad heavy and underpowered.
MG Magnette or Volvo Amazon would be nice
