Changing rego from NSW to QLD

I sold a car to a guy in QLD. What’s the process in changing rego from NSW to QLD?

This guy wants me to de-register the car in NSW, so he can register it in QLD. Doesn’t sound right to me.

    Any ideas?

I have bought two vehicles from interstate. I reached an agreement with the seller that I would buy the car with the interstate rego intact. Once I got it to Brisbane, I got a local roadworthy certificate done and registered the car in Queensland (stamp duty is a lot less up here). I then sent the plates back to transport authority in the original state cancelling the rego and collecting the refund.

Ive done it countless times..really I cant remember.
If he has asked you to de reg it in NSW then giddy up to you, do that. zip the plates off, hand em in & get your refund. Ask no further Qs. The rest is his problem. If you transfer the reg you wont get the refund, you will need a NSW rwc & its way more of a PITA than just taking the plates off & handing them in.

There is no way to transfer the rego interstate as far as i know? Even if you take it in, effectively they cancel the rego, give you the portion thats still remaining, and if you like you can put that towards your new rego. But you have to get a safety cert/roadworthy/blue slip in your current state.

Thats what happened moving from VIC to QLD anyhow.

I reached an agreement with the seller that I would buy the car with the interstate rego intact.
You are not actually meant to do that (but plenty of people to), as if the new buyer gets any camera fines, etc it goes back to the old owner. Technically also, I don't think the car is "yours" until the transfer papers are signed over to somebody else. You could have a written receipt saying its "yours" but would get messy if any accident, theft, or anyting else occurred in that window.

Yeah I know, but I did it anyway and I regstered it in my name asap. Also I bought these vehicles from other long term members of this forum. In one case I also provided a stat dec to the seller saying that I had taken possesion of the vehicle when he informed he'd droped it at the transpor depot.

There was a fairly equal exchange of trust in both of my transactions.

I traded in a old shit heap of a daily to a car yard when i was upgrading my daily, about a week later i had the police knocking on my door at 3am, the car yard didnt transfer the rego over to them, and the new owners didnt either, going by what the cops told me it had been used in a few drive offs and other minor thefts, i showed the copper the transfer paper that stated the car yard purchased it and also the paper work for my new new car that showed i had traded it in. The copper was happy with it and told VKG to note it down till a case file could be opened or words like that. Thank god he was a nice cop and helped me fix things up, even thou we are ment to hand in the sale slip to the RTA

You can't register a NSW car unless you have a NSW license (they also call them customer numbers) AND a NSW address.

I bought a NSW reg car and transferred it to QLD rego in November last year. Process goes exactly like this:

                  1) Hand over cash
                  2) Seller gives you rego slip signed on the back authorising transfer of rego to you in NSW.
                  3) Drive/Truck car to QLD
                  4) Get QLD safety certificate
                  5) Pay for QLD 3rd party compulsorary insurance and get receipt (don't need a rego number yet. Use the NSW rego number)
                  6) Hand in NSW plates at Queensland Transport and get receipt
                  7) Show 3rd party insurance receipt and pay rest of rego
7.5) Pay stamp duty based on price on back of NSW rego slip (edit)
                  8) Get new plates
                  9) You have 24 hours to put the plates on so you can drive without any plates at all.
                  10) Send NSW plate surrender receipt and proof of QLD rego to:

                  Manual Refunds Officer
                  Driver Administration
                  Locked Bag 14
                  Grafton NSW 2460

                  11) Wait for refund from NSW RTA
                  12) Done!

NB: You have 7 days between step 2 and step 8.

Also here I just remembered (duh!)
