Crossroads Glendale mitsubishi here in Newcastle has a big banner in the car yard saying $19,990 with free steak knives or some shit..LOL

not a bad option. the new MY06's are $31,990.00+delivery. Subaru has gone the odd (but probably good for the consumer) route of including stamp duty and rego/CTP in the RRP.
I think the $19,990 jobs are used, but fully factory backed or something.
There is only one basic human right, the right to do as you damn well please. And with it comes the only basic human duty, the duty to take the consequences.
When buying and selling are controlled by legislation, the first things to be bought and sold are legislators.

i've driven the older model rav4 before, can't stand it - easily one of the worst cars i've driven with respect to comfort - although the fact it's owned by one of the bosses at work and therefore is full of smelly dog hair could have something to do with it.
Yeah ex lease cars- new tyres, hubcaps (lol) and interiors in some cases
They sold heaps up here a year back- great that mitsu looks after used prices like they do :D
Muz
ROFL! fair enuff. All I paid attention to was the big banner. Because it was big and yellow and stuff.

RAV4 do well on the road. It's one of the better ones but I guess not as chuckable as the Forester but at least it looks like a 4WD without looking like a jacked up car. Nor does it look like a bargain basement which the Forester seems to do quite well. If you can look beyond that, get the Forester. If not, get the RAV4 (in a Cruiser spec... it has ABS). Mind you I've drive the 2L and now have a 2.4 and they aren't bad. 2.4 will give u loads of torque than you really need without breaking the speed limit so you don't have to rush down the hill to prepare for the uphill climb.
One thing though is that the RAV4 will use as much fuel on the highway as you would in the city (3200rpm @ 110 in 5th). I don't do that many highway k's so it's not really an issue. I think it's more the gearing than the external shape of it all. Anyway, freeway and city range is around 520 with a bit of room to get to a petrol station (57L tank).
Back seats are gear coz you can slide the rear seats forwards and backwards as well as for the bigger kids lean back should you so please or remove them totally and make them walk. You'll fit more in a RAV4 with the seats down than you can with a Forester.
Btw, the 2L and 2.4L run on timing chains unlike the Subarus except the 3L motors so no more snapping belts.
If you have no intention for a proper 4WD system, get the CRV. A bit bigger and I guess easier on fuel. Again, only the Sports model has ABS.
Buy what you want dude, a lot of these guys are anti-4WD because it's trendy at the moment apparently...
Actually, we're anti - "4WD because it's trendy at the moment".
:D
To answer the original question, if you need the ability to drive through not-too-deep mud etc, then I believe any of the dinky gerlytrux will do it. However, none of them are particularly exciting to drive (or stable c/f a car), so they're all much the same; Forester & RAV4 probably have the best resale, CRV not far behind, and the rest would be a bit behind that. In terms of reliability, they're all going to be much the same.
In other words, I doubt you can lose out buying any of them; Vitari, RAV4, CRV, Forester, Entrail. Oh ... maybe avoid the Freeloader.
Soft roaders represent an excellent compromise between the needs of the hardcore 4x4 user and the convenience of a city hatchback. Its clear to see why they have become so popular in todays society.
There's no way that's the difference between auto & manual.
It'll be the difference between 2.4 & 2.0 versions (AFAIK there was no 2.2 version).

RAV4 = constant gearbox woes, both manual and auto
terrible terrible nightmares....

Sorry, am late to this thread. I have been protesting against whitey oppressors all morning with my people. I shall serenade this thread with my didge until nash comes in and puts it all into perspective.
Hmm... It appears that I suck.
They are indeed 2.0.
Well anyhow. My mum has had both the 2.0 and 2.4 ltr cruiser pack Rav 4s. Both Autos. I have driven both quite alot. They are very nice cars to drive. They don't set the world on fire in terms of performance, but what can you expect. You can really qutie notice the increase in torque of the 2.4. Braking performance is quite cromulent. Come with pretty good kit in them too. Sunroof, ABS and other useful shit. As someone said the back seats are quite user friendly. I don't think you could go too far wrong with one.
Torque sells tow cars.
Horsepower wins horse races.
