Another thing which worried me is that people saw it, and reported it, but did nothing.. I just don't get it. If I saw something like that, I doubt I'd be composed enough not to go vigilante on them. I certainly wouldn't stand around waiting for police to attend.

Don't read the passage below if you are sensitive to animal stuff.

        -----
One of the most distressing things I've ever experienced (and I've not been nearly as worked up over humans, whatever that might say about me) is when a car in front of me in a relatively quiet suburban street hit a dog. They stopped, got out and checked their car for damage, and drove off, leaving it to die without a second though. Poor damn thing was losing blood our of every orifice, and the concussion knocked one of it's eyes out of the socket. I ended up having to break it's neck, but it was still showing tremors. I didn't know if it was still alive or if it was just nervous system 'twitches' like chickens can have with their head cut off (apparently, I've never seen it) and I ended up clubbing it's head in with the steering wheel lock to make sure. It took literally a second or two, but it felt like a fucking eternity.

I couldn't believe how they just drove off completely unconcerned. I had a choice to make, either help the dog or have a go at them.... so I made my choice.

        ----

But the thing is - I really think that this is the measure of any so called civilised society - what we do or don't do, when there's no witnesses, or no incentive to act a certain way.

Is there any evidence or suspicion such shark baiting is done anywhere in Aus? I would have thought it possible but at the very least uncommon, essentially because it's completely unnecessary. Catching a shark (and I don't have as big a problem if the person intends to eat the bloody thing, but I'm dead set against getting them, cutting off just the fin, and throwing it back, thereby leaving it to die anyway...) is hardly a bloody challenge - drop some animal blood (anything from a butcher will do) and a reasonable chunk of meat and if it's in the area, and hungry, it'll come calling. It's just completely unnecessary to use live bait at all.

I guess some would argue that the way the bait is hooked (and alive) is no different to what a fish goes through being caught too.

If people are looking for an arguably slightly more ethical meat, generally speaking, the way an animal is slaughtered to be considered kosher (apologies if I'm not getting the exact adverbs etc right) is actually fairly humane. It's 'equivalent' of a carotid artery, or possibly jugular vein is cut, and the animal is slowly tilted over and laid on the ground. It'll feel the cut (only just) and then fall unconscious as it's being laid down. It's also only usable if absolutely no bones are broken apparently, so it's a safer bet that any meat you get via this source will have been treated and slaughtered a little less cruelly than some.

Reminds me of a company I did some consulting work for. The place was highly unionised and there was some tension between the bosses and workers. When asked what he thought was the best way to resolve the issues, one manager said in a deadpan tone "put poison in their food and start again". Perhaps these clowns should be the first "volunteers" for that program...

              yep, i agree.

when i lived in Keilor, Victoria, there was one family (they had also been on a current affair) with 13 kids, wife had a stroke yadda yadda.

Basically the little bastards ran amok and broke into every house/car/backyard shed within a 3 suburb radius. One family fucked up an otherwise nice area.

Im going back to my review of immigration policies again. One criminal conviction & you & all your relatives are back off from whence you came.

If not immigrants then perhaps a couple of days (covered in dripping etc) in the cages with dogs that are about to be destroyed for attacking people might be a nice solution.

Macquarie fields is about 15-20 minutes away from Claymore, where the incident actually happened, similarly, Minto is a couple of suburbs away and anything written before the riot would of been put down as a suburb of Campbelltown...

The media is grabbing on to Macquarie Fields whenever they can as it gets peoples attention.

If you want to get rid of everyone in the area between Macquarie Fields and Claymore, then you will loose a few PF members amongst the couple of hundred thousand people gone.

BUT, there is nothing worse then cruelty to any living creature for the sake of it.

yes they should have stricter laws for 'new citizens'. All for that, some of them think they are still in beirut.

Also penalties for mistreatment of animals should be the same as humans.

Macquarie Fields is, for a lack of a better phrase, full of white trailer trash. I don't see how bringing immigration has anything to do with this....

perhaps when they are granted residency they should be on a probation period of five years or so, do anything wrong and residency revoked
