What are the benefits of leasing it vs a personal loan with a residual?

You can get personal loans with residuals?
There's probably no difference between that & leasing; the difference will be about terminology & how things are charged. A lot of car leases are a part of salary-packaging; but because of the way FBT is calculated you may or may not be better-off depending on the km's you do & your existing income.
Soft roaders represent an excellent compromise between the needs of the hardcore 4x4 user and the convenience of a city hatchback. Its clear to see why they have become so popular in todays society.

What sort of costs are you up for per month with the lease? And is it through a company or just a personal lease?

Yes, ANZ offer a secured car loan with a residual. Salary packaging is not an option unfortunatly and FBT would kill me

The total on road was $36,500, I pay $642 per month for the lease and at the end of 4 yrs the residual is $14,250.

I claimed back the total GST on the car on day 1 of the lease.

Check the total monthly payments then, and see what works out best.
I got all excited about leasing, when I first started looking into it years ago; but found out you're paying interest on the whole amount you're borrowing even though they're arranging for a lump-sum at the end.
Basically, I'd be a little surprised if you're actually any better-off overall; although the monthly repayments in the short-term are probably lower (you're paying less off over 3 years, before paying a whopping-great amount all in one hit; but because you're paying less off over the first 3 years, you're probably paying more interest all-up too).
