OK, the rules for these events wont cross over sufficiently for any car to be competitive in all 3, not even 2 of them. So, you need to work out which one is for you, build a car to the regs or buy one already like it. If after that, you can enter some other form of competition with the car then take it as a bonus, but because you wont have exploited those regs fully you will not be competitive.

Cal, they run that in Vic too. I believe the dreaded one make series cost explosion has started in that category, as it has in the 944 series.

Thanks Cal, I've seen that site a few times.
I think I'll do as Datman and others have said and save the penny's.
I don't think I'll be able to be that picky, obviously there won't be to many 2002 race cars around... considering I'll most likely plow it in to a wall I'll just keep my ear to the ground for something good to come up when I have some more cash.

Edo: I'd be just starting out, so I don't expect to be competitive at all however I'll take your advise and pick 1 category to get the car for and then just enter for fun in the others.
Obviously I'll have to attend more events before deciding.

I looked at building a 2002 a couple of years ago. Didn't make sense when compared to other things you could build for the money. You'll quickly spend $30K on one.

Dunno if you remember but Bob Watson had a 2002 Tii that he won his class in targa in & in CA. (probably 5 years ago) He sold that for $13k ready to go, it was a super clean car. But yes, it probably cost a heap more to put together.

Where is the best place to find race cars for sale? Both online and otherwise?

Yeah reading through those regulations on the E30 site I reckon I could start spending some serious dollars very very quickly if I were aiming at winning by spending the most.

What you do should depend on what you want out of racing. Some take it really seriously, want to kick arse and win at all costs, others just enjoy the scene, going fast and the personal challenge. It's very important to work this out for yourself for obvious reasons.

If you are a BMW enthusiast perhaps you'd like to race a BMW, even if it will never be the quickest car around. But you want to race a BMW because you like them and thats the most important thing to you. See what I'm getting at?

I'd never expect to win and it would only be a fun thing.
I've seen what it's like even at the saloon car level and only those with far far more cash then I would ever spend make the top 10.

No it's a personal entertainment thing only.

As for being a BMW ethusiast.. only really the old school.. more of a ford fan really.

Exactly. I had as much fun last Sunday dicing with the last 4 cars in the pack as I would have at the front or the middle. To me the most important thing is that the racing is close.

Yeah, if you want to do that, you can do that...but after you decide on a Marque you need to start at the top of my list.

                            Here is an example:
                            I lerrrve BMWs
Ive slutted myself around race tracks for a year & read the rule book for all the categories & I reckon IP is my go.
Now I need to carefully think which BMW is going to be best suited for the job.
I could run a 2002 with a E30 M3 donk, gearbox & diff. 5 series front struts with brakes will go in (I have no idea if they do, but you should). Or I could run a E21 6 cyl coupe with a 3.2 M3 donk, box & diff....
                            Or should I get a E30, or the E36 hatch, or a 5 series cause I reckon a V8 would be better.
With each & every option that rushes into your head, think of the downsides & see if the rules let you get around them.
Then, start work on what you know will ultimately be an uncompetitive car because you restricted yourself to BMWs.

And trust me, running at the back is more fun than doing no racing and living in Melbourne. :D
