The reality is a RX7 is a sports car and should never have been allowed in ipra
But a Nissan GTR isn't a sports car ?? I don't see people whinge about that car and it was the runner up in NSW this year - or is it the "fuckin'whoosh !!!" factor that makes it acceptable ??

Thank Alan Moffat for making the RX-7 eligible. Don't whinge, it's running against cars of similar stature and is often beaten by other cars, so why the big drama ?? Besides, if the RX-7 wasn't allowed we'd all be running 808 sedans with the same engine (think Phil Lairds 808 wagon maybe ??) and still be competitive. The S.A guys run turbo'd BP1800 Mazda piston engines in their 808 sedans and do well, or should they be banned because they are Mazdas too...

I thought you might get fired up on that one Paul

I can understand peoples frustrations about RX7's - HOWEVER - they are eligible under the rules as a touring car - full stop - end of story. As Paul says we can Thank Mr. Moffatt for that.

        Paul,
Im not having a go at mazda in general i have no worries about rotaries (apart from their fucking anoying sound :knock: ), what i am saying is exactly what you said "thanks a fucking lot Mr Moffat. A RX7 is a sports car, NOT A TOURING CAR, yes i know they raced at bathurst as a touring car yadda yadda yadda. Touring cars where generally concided 4 seater/4 door, 4 seater/2 door sedans. Convertable, targa top and mid engined cars are concided not suitable blah blah, like i said earlier they are the cars that are in the class, all that means is that we have to try harder. To be honest the RX7 is the car to have really though, goooood power to weight, well balanced, good availability of motorsport goodies, nice slippery shape. Ahh fuckit they still sound shit though

Like i said in my earlier post Paul, it doesnt matter what you race, it still takes a big effort to be competitive in IPRA, the great thing about IPRA is the diversety of cars in it and some do better at some tracks than others, the only thing and im sure you will agree the catagory is a bit like Fomular RX7 sometimes, but that is only at the moment, that will soon change to Formular Commonwhore i reckon or something like that. RX7 just seems to be a popular choice of weapon and rightly so, why not start with the best suitable tool for the job?? Mind you if you guys get bridge port ill be pushing for bigger turbo restrictors!! (work with me here Datman!)

            Isn't a Rx7 just a 1st generation Mazda 323 with a "slightly" more stylish body?

We've already got bridgeports Trav, it's peripheral ports that i wouldn't mind...

As for getting fired up, Mark is right it does piss me off a bit when people go "ohhh, but it's a sportscar..." To me an RX-7 is no more a sports car than a twin turbo 6 cyl 4wd coupe though is it ?? But no-one whinges about the GTR - and the only reason they don't is because of cost. If you could build a GTR with the same budget as an RX-7 everyone would be doing them, and then people would be on the "ban 4wd" bandwagon...

I looked at the rules and couldn't build my dream car with my available budget. I looked at the next best few options and it was either an Under 2 ltr Gemini coupe (my first car, i have a soft spot for them) or an Overs RX-7. Having a good mate who runs a rotary workshop made it a no brainer... And for about a third of what my VX SS IPRA car would have cost me i'm racing with a car that is comfortably in the Top 10 at State level with a pretty average driver...

Everyone has the same opportunity, stick to the rules and build the best car you can...

              Peace out...

He he, no worries Fatboy, i really dont have anything against the RX7 but shit all you Rotary heads get on the american band wagon when someone has a dig at them, i love it, i reckon its great, i also think deep down rotary heads hate that terrible sound too, they are just to proud to admit it!!!
I call a truece before we start ipra belting one another!!!!!!!

Actually I comment as an observer and enthusiast, keen to see the development of racing featuring older cars. So any 'whinging' I do is an attempt to point out how the sport looks from the outside, how a potential sponsor or spectator may see it.

Only my opinion which as far as I know I'm still free to express, there were a couple of other things that could have been discussion worthy in more robust company but can't be bothered now.

Hey Richard...I wasn't referring to you specifically about the "whinging" comment - Hope I didn't offend ya.

The thing is.... in every category of racing there always people who say "I don't understand why (insert topic)......or "if only you could do (insert extra mod here) it would be heaps better" .....If every category was like that......we would all be racing sports sedans.

Bagging out other peoples race cars and the class they compete in won't win you too much admiration mate, simple fact of life. If you want to take your bat and ball and go home like a little kid then good for you...

I have two problems with IPRA:

                        1. I don't own a car that would be usefull in IPRA
                        2. I don't have the time or money to get in to IPRA

Both of these should be changed by the IPRA people, it's not my fault I am short on time, money and talent!

And i don't have the time, money (or skill !!) to race IPRA but what the hell, you only live once... :D

Was that the dark blue one? Last time I saw it (ironically at a day/night event earlier this year..) it was running on two cylinders and steam cleaning pit lane...

That's the one... Ross Street's car.

Mind you the R32 GTR blew up in the morning, the SR20T Datto 120Y blew up after Race 2, and Wattsy's RX-7 and Mick Posa's RX-3 both had problems and DNF'd in the final...

But as a wise old man once said "to finish first, first you must finish..." :p

Fatboy, I do not think Richard was bagging out the class really at all. He was having a friendly dig earlier on.
