If you know a decent rotary mechanic (which can be a challenge in itself) then get yourself a Series 6 RX-7... Not only do they look horn but they really are an enjoyable car to drive, and more than capable with a few reasonable mods that don't cost the earth...

Oh, and if you don't know a decent rotary mechanic buy an S15...
The older i get, the better i was...

Nah, Bozz replaced them, I was at work! I think he's still mentally scarred from it!!

Ive owned mine 5 years, Got it as a stocker, looked at over 15 cars before I settled on it. Since then its had a blown headgasket, the aformentioned rubber water lines problem, complete cooling system replaced, new brakes, new driveshaft boots... this year alone its had a complete engine rebuild ($$$) , rear diff rebuild, A/C system overhauled.....

Now the transfer case is near farked (rebuild due...more $$$) & im worried about the massive loading im putting through the stock gearbox..... (OS giken gearset most likely.... bye bye $5k easy)

....and when do I use it? Weekends maybe! Yes I love it to death but.....

Its cost me almost the price I paid for it in fixes & mods, and is noisy, uncomfortable to ride in, cramped, bumpy, annoying to park, has shit headlights, every wannabe hero wants to race you, has no CD/MP3 player (still!) & costs a mint to insure!

If it didnt owe me so much, id prob just sell it but i need to get some use from it, problem being its very hard to use its full potential on the street.

In the past few days ive driven or been in a '04 STI, a VX2 Clubsport & a VZ Hsv GTO, all 3 were impressive, easy to drive, liveable day-to-day & fun ..... and I prob could of owned each of them for what ive spent on the R.....

Buy a GTR if you can put up with the bills when its broken.....

If I were you id buy a S15.
      ...meh.

Take note of the above kiddies. The GT-R is car meant to be owned by a MAN with alot of MONEY.

Your life savings plus a coles wage doesn't cut it with this bad boy.

A mate of mine just bought one...came with a sheaf of receipt from the previous owner that added up to $50k+. Since then he has spent $16k+ on it himself, and he owns a workshop and labour is free

So far the rabid consumption of cubic dollars is mightly impressive for a car that's worth $25k :D

Can't be fucked reading the entire thread but I know most people have said don't buy one unless you can afford to...

From personal experience I can only agree... If costs are an issue, this is not the car for you...

I had a very nice, clean, well maintained 89 GTR... But I still had it up on the hoist every now and again fixing minor stuff...

If you are keen to 'look after it' - meaning constantly maintain it - by all means get one, they are unreal to drive, personally they are my favourite car, but don't expect them to be cheap to own.

GTR parts are not a lot more expensive than, say Maxima parts from Nissan. I would even say they are similarly priced. It still makes you say : " $40 for a brake fluid reservoir cap ???" but geniune parts are always a rip off, you know that.
Yep that's the one I meant, had a heartattack when I read that myself.

                  Thoughts on JZA80 Supra?

                  Same rules apply?
This is my sig. There are many like it, but this one is mine. My sig is my best friend. It is my life. I must master it as I must master my life. My sig, without me, is useless. Without my sig, I am useless.

Oh no... Supra is exempt from every rule.

                    They can neva lose.

Yes, the rules apply to every performance car mate. Find an unmolested stock one that has been looked after and you will enjoy it for a long time, if you refrain from modding it like the original poster is intending to.

RNGTR brings his modified GTR to the table and scares everyone off. The other rule is that : If you wanna play, you gotta pay.

What mods define a 'modified' GT-R?
The reason I ask is last week I purchased an R32 GT-R with the only mods being a full exhaust, bit more boost, pod filters and coilovers. I was a little put off by reading comments such as those that have been posted here but decided to bite the bullet and see how it goes, I'm hoping it doesn't turn all pear shaped.
I also own a 13BT Datsun 1200, so regular maintenance, broken parts and various other headaches will not faze me too much I hope :D

This applies to every performance car.

Noone gets out of bed needing to by a GTR that week. You need to become an enthusiast and do some research on the cars. In this case, join the SAU and ask questions, go to club meets, meet and speak with the owners, etc.

A GTR with an exhaust and wheels is a bonus. Pods are OK but more often do more harm than good. Coilovers is a personal thing. Now, what does a bit more boost mean...? It's more the case of how the ex-owners treated the car, which with imports is more of a gamble. An untouched stock ECU will protect the engine very well, if it's been modified, I'd be weary.

I ran 15-16 psi for 2+ years on stock turbos and when pulled out they were in top shape. Other owners (mainly R32) spat the exhaust wheel out in 3 months of running 1 bar. Some people kill their rebuilt engine driving it on the street; I am still on my dead stock engine after 100+ dyno runs, 60+ 1/4 mile runs and a few track days as well as street duties.

You already have the car mate, so enjoy.

Thanks for the reply, I probably should have been more specific. After owning a rotary I was aware of doing some research before going out and buying one, so I spent time searching the SAU forums reading up on the pros and cons of GTR ownership.
I'm also a member of the Nissan/Datsun Sports Owners Club and this perhaps swayed my decision to get the GTR so that I could participate in more track events and twisties cruises and bought the car off a fellow club member who is also a GTR enthusiast.
Boost-wise I think the car is on 13-14psi from memory, HKS roller turbos have been fitted as well, stock ecu is still being used.
Sounds like you have had a good run with yours, I hope mine will be just as enjoyable, I'm looking forward to it
