I think the NSX is dead.

Hey, has the Cayman been mentioned? Under the budget, but according to Wheels it outdrives the n/a 911's ...
Soft roaders represent an excellent compromise between the needs of the hardcore 4x4 user and the convenience of a city hatchback. Its clear to see why they have become so popular in todays society.

Good suggestion! I was actually thinking about this last night. Probably does everything the S does and would make it easier to get past the Finance Committee (ie wife). That said, is it much better than a Boxter S? Guess it might not have the same stigma attached.

        There is a GT3 is/was available for $150,000 here http://www.porscheclub.org.au/marketplace/

I saw review on the Cayman a couple of days ago and they were very impressed. Expected to be sold from first quarter of 06. See below...

          What stigma is that?

you said he doesn't like the M6 styling, i presume he doesn't like the M5 styling too?

what about E46 M3 CSL? Can be had for under $190k, and they're an absolute weapon to drive..
anything AMG 55 or 65 would be good, but probably out of budget.. and have it's arse handed to it around a track by the CSL provided there's enough twisty bits

Same stigma every entry level Porsche has ever had...that they are looked down upon by so called 'real' porsche owners (who are 99% of the time total wankers).

Dunno, if he likes the idea or not but what about a classic car? If he wants a real GT, what about a DB5 or DB6...or a muira if he leans towards sporty. Ferrari Daytona? (if he doesnt go weak at the knees when he hears one, I think he might be dead) 246 Dino?
Sure they will all cost more to run & they will be unreliable but it doesnt really matter if he has to drive his daily car to work one friday, or turn up to a track day in his race car does it.
Ask him what car he most lusted for when he was 16...then tell him to buy that.

Yes like the M5. Its under consideration. In the flesh, its an awesome looking car with great attention to detail. The M6 on the other hand looks... odd.

E46 CSLs aren't worth the premium over the normal M3s. He's had an E36 M3 in the past and it was a sh**box with the early troublesome SMG (had it replaced twice under warranty). I've driven the E46 M3, and whilst its a beautiful car, wasn't blown away by the power. Its due to be replaced in 12-18months anyway with a more powerful V8. IMHO E46 value will take a dive soon after to a more reasonable level.

As mentioned before - 65's are out of price range ($400k+) but E/CLS55s are under consideration. A 4 door saloon isn't quite the same as a 2 door coupe like an Aston though. I think if you had the Aston, each time you saw it in the garage you'd get a hard on, whereas M5/E55/CLS55 would soon just be another sedan.

                  Good suggestion. Will do.

Yes lots of snob value amongst Porsche owners, basically anything against anything thats not a 911. Personally I'd love a Boxter S!

Buy a boxster S and get a sticker made up reading

Jag XKR (inc Convertible) will fit the price range.

If you wanted English reliability, you'd at least buy an Aston or something that actually looks good

New Ford GT40 - They can apparently beat both the Fez 360 Race car and the Porsche Track (dont know the model - GT3?) racing car. It would also be extremely rare - probably moreso than a ferrari or porshe.
