The most dangerous risk of all - the risk of spending your life not doing what you want, on the bet you can buy yourself the freedom to do it later. - Randy Komisar.
I also have the suspicion that Ford's press GTs were 'special'. Clarkson drove a press car and loved it so much he ordered one. When he got his own car, he hated it, claimed it was nothing like the car he'd driven and (successfully) demanded that Ford take it back. Although this is Clarkson we're talking about, so it all has to be taken with a grain of salt.
Edo: Roaring Forties have a pretty good reputation for replicas, don't they? That's definitely something I'd be considering if I were in his (expensive) shoes.
New cars I'd probably take the M5, not the best look in someways but it does boggy, for it's weight.
Second hand Ferrari's and 911 Turbos can be had for the same money, all low K's and good fun.
I'd throw in R34 GTR, something like the last lot NISMO did, but it's an import and probably second hand.
Not a great fan of the Merc's, I love them but there really a cruiser car, especially not being able to turn off the traction control at all.
I personally for a seemy weekend come track come nice driver on the road car would pick a late model E46 M3 and bolt a ESS Supercharger kit onto it. produces another 130-225HP on top of the current 340, and that would make the car come alive.
Just a thought.

No one pays attention until you make a mistake.
I started out with nothing and I still have most of it left.

I thought Clarkson's issue was with the alarm?

Juha Kankkunen - Rally of Argentina '02
It could be - I wouldn't have a clue personally! I heard this information from a friend who probably heard it from another friend, and then I took it as gospel. If so, just ignore it!
ford actually took it back and was willing to give he the full amount refund.... so in the meantime (while ford tried to figure out what was wrong with the GT40), they gave JC a DB9 to get around.....
will see if i can still find the link...
corvette queensland have a C6 corvette in the country already, and i think will have Z06's here in the next few months, if he was interested. I'd be inclined to check out how the RHD conversion on the C6 goes before purchasing, some of their stuff is good, some less so...
clarkson was just a big wuss, re: the gt40 - any sensible human would have ditched the alarm system and added an aftermarket alternative.
Of course, most sensible humans, if they really had to get rid of the car, would have sold it on (for much more than retail) - instead of getting a refund
You would never be able to register it here but I'll say that Vanwall replica Hampster drove in the last episode of TG, besteststest car ever.
Not luxurious enough and probably more trouble than they're worth (plus he's already got a 911) but he wont find another 2.7 Carrera RS in the carpark on Friday and they are still oh sooo cool.
Realistically... You'd have to say the M5 would be the best choice on his list... You can take 3 mates for a hills thrash and scare the shit out of them... Can't really do that in a 997 or an Aston

But if you're after a pose-mobile, the M5 only shows how good you are to the few people who know what an M5 is. Non-truck Porsches & Aston Martins are known by everyone to be 'exclusive'.
Soft roaders represent an excellent compromise between the needs of the hardcore 4x4 user and the convenience of a city hatchback. Its clear to see why they have become so popular in todays society.
