Solved it, found some large pieces of very soft foam about one centimeter thick that they put around edges of large boxes and cut long strips about an inch wide and coiled the strips around the wires and taped either end with lekky tape. Each strip gives about 50cm of coverage when coiled up.
All rattles are cured! The car will now be much less nerveracking on the drive to queensland this weekend.
Cheers from the new candyass. Sorry Tom, you suck at being candy, its back to the east coast now
I'd like to thank Ford for producing mostly automatic products and me having a rare manual fairmont, my parents, for without them, some other poor sod would have been the ass, the pope for leading so many sheep, the SES for all the fantastic work they do, Mel Brooks for making cool movies, my dog for being an annoying shit while i'm working (picking up random parts and burying them in the backyard) and of course rolin7 because he just is.

nar, just rattles that were pissing me off. I was wondering what commonly fails behind there for me to fix while i had it apart but who cares, only takes an hour to get it apart if anything else breaks. I mean WHEN the next thing breaks.Originally posted by Madhatrahh a good ol ford dash, problem with the heater box?WTB in Melb - Ford AU 6 cyl engine - needs to be in good conditionOriginally posted by paul05don't waste your time asking questions about real cars on the rice forum go to ls1 .com ,it's alot more accommodating and informative than pf.

good thing you dont have an auto then, the console rattles like a bitch (silicone lube is great though).
Leaves in the blower motor are a big one, a total PITA because its noisy as hell and the only way to get to it is from the dash.
The vacuum system is known to suddenly fuck itself over too, so if things suddenly stop working (like all of a sudden your vents stop working), have fun removing the dash again if the lines in the engine bay are still connected :o
Im just collecting problems with my fairmont, when i have enough of them to fix ill remove the dash, used to do that for a living and i hate ford dashes and heater boxes.Originally posted by Buford T. You dont need to remove the dash to get leaves out the fan.
You can pull the front of the footwell duct and the fan is right there.
Id much rather work on my Falcon and pay for parts than doing the same on my R31. Just recently I had to replace the heater hoses, heater pipes, and thermostat on the R31. Cost? $200. And only the thermostat is available off the shelf, the rest has to be ordered interstate from Nissan, which is great when its saturday afternoon and you need the car Sunday.
And whats with the heater pipe screwing into the side of the block? No doubt sitting there for 20years means it aint coming out with alot of swearing, skinned knuckles etc.
You cant get it out without destroying the pipe (ie no chance of getting a 2nd hand one), and theres not enough room to get a spanner in there to put a new one in.

the foam and conuit are good but if you want the best result get some 3M splicing tape its a rubber tape that you stretch and wrap around wiring then it bonds to itself making it look like thick heatshrink but is easier to wrap around looms as you dont have to worry about the plugs and stuff get it from you local electrical wholesaler eg: John r turk, rexel etc it dunno what it costs cuz i get it through work but i imagine its not all that cheap but its the gun
