The problem is Tripper, it's not the big items like engines that blow the budget's out...it's all the little things that you never think of that need to be done at the same time. To have fun on the track you need to change brakes and suspension too....or at least you will after the first time out......it all costs money and adds up very quickly. I am sure Paul can back me up on this.

Buy a car for $8k ready to race...then most of the hardwoek is done. If you want to tweak it, you will still have plenty of opportunity because a car for $8k is not going to be a front runner - but it will be fun, and you will never build the same car for $8k.

Look for an old Alfa, as any of those will smash a 1600.

          Or a Toyota Sprinter

If your wanting something more modern a MX-5 or don't rule out a Toyota Starlet GT

All these cars can be competitive and fun to drive if set-up correctly.

I believe all with in your budget also.

          Thanks,
          12 Second Boosted Alfa

Old Datto = always faster than Old Alfa

Been there and done that. Our IPRA-legal Alfa will run 1:57s around Eastern Creek. The slow Dattos run 1:55s....the pole guys are 1:50. One of the quicker Alfas around will run a 1:54 - but it's not legal for IPRA as far as I know (no bumpers, possibly perspex windows etc).

For 8K on my105.com I'd be looking at something logbooked and simple.

Far out, never in my life have i realised how much i love drifters. The whole AE86 craze has made a significant amount of parts easy to get and cheap to boot. I did the sums on my car the other day and it owes me a tad above 10k now.

Maybe a hot Vb-Vl 308 Commodore and add some VT twin pistons and a whiteline kit?

Race in the gemini series for a season then sell your car/trailer for exactly what you paid for it a year prior and then consider what you want to do next. Gemini series will give you 'equal' (ish... ...) competitors to run against at CAMS championship rounds, the Mt. Cotton hillclimb, AASA racedays at QR and there isn't any cheaper circuit racing in Australia.
Don't worry, thats just the self-preservation instinct, in my experience you can safely ignore it.

Takai - no doubt there are plenty of AE86 parts available since drifting became so prominent but have you seen how much people are asking for Sprinters nowadays? Fark!

Same thing with S13's, you can pick up an SR20DET S13 race rally for about 5k and have an ocean of performance parts available for next to nothing

IMOA has a great point. A race only S13 would be very cheap to buy and you get a factory turbo motor, strong driveline, nice chassis and good brakes and suspension standard. On top of that that you can get any aftermarket part you're after second hand or brand spankers. Worth a thought..........

Make sure that if you progress past doing sprints that your car is eligible for an actual racing category. Else you may find yourself spending a lot of money to make your car eligible
