    opinion from mechanics

i took my car into get a front left CV done and some minor other things but nothing else. on my car the front left driveshaft unbolts from the transfer case via 6 bolts, kinda hard to explain but basically to remove shaft from car you just unbolt at transfer case and remove from hub.

anyway the mechanic has popped the whole main shaft out of the transfer case and lost a bunch of oil. the car has been sitting there since monday and now they're telling me they've ordered the oil and it'll take a few days to get to townsville (yay nobody in tsv stocks redline oil, and i need it for the warranty on the gearset etc).

i'm tempted to go down, get the car towed home, pay for the CV replacement etc (but not the oil) and tell them to stick the rest of the charges, i really don't trust my car being with some morons anymore.......would this be fair?

i'm pretty p*ssed off going from a car that just needed a very simple CV replacement and i end up having no car for a week (probably be more in the end) just because they do something totally not needed (i.e. no shaft needed to be popped out of the box, and they mechanic said "well that's just the way we did it. no point crying over spilt milk".

Get them to cleanly recover the remainder of the oil, and put something else in temporarily?

what sort of car?? Sometimes the gearbox/diff seal is leaking and it's the perfect opportunity to replace it when the shaft is out. Is it RWD and you're talking about the rear driveshaft ala Skyline, or FWD?
Turns out, far too much has been written about great men and not nearly enough about morons

import bluebird sss (sr20det, awd). 6000km old rebuilt gearbox with ppg straight cut gears, all new seals.

the front left hand side shaft unbolts from the shaft that runs right through the transfer case via 6 star-headed bolts.

Do you have a Coventry Auto in Tsv? They do stock Redline if your mechanic says he can't get it.
I agree, in the menatime find a more competent mechanic.

never heard of them so i doubt it, not in whitepages

redline oil is near impossible to get a hold of up here, usually a couple of days wait. is it true it can't go by air and has to come by road?

Yeahp, as far as I'm aware that was definitely the case when I used to order it...
