Sorry can I ask one last question.. Why did you go from a GTS-t to a Verada? As in what made you change?

hamish, thanks for the input, i've considered 2L N14 and N15 pulsars as well as things like 306 Pugs, but the pulsars don't appeal to me for some reason and i'm scared of maintenance on oldish Euro hatches. I think part of the reason i'm saying a magna is because i drove dad's excel for most of last week, and while it's fun to rev the engine up and have a bit of a go in it every once in a while, having to rev it up to get away from the lights does wear me down and after driving the VN again today the lazy torque (comparatively anyway) was refreshing.

As another factor, I only really need this car to last me 4-5 years until i'm well and truly out of uni and on a salary, when i can get into something more 'performance'.

I never owned a GTS-t myself, two of my best mates have them and I drive their cars quite often, so I've had a good feel for them. I was heavily considering buying one myself, but I'm glad I stuck with the Verada for now.

I learnt my lesson on performance cars with my previous car, a FC RX-7. I'm still paying for it and I don't even own it :knock:

Why have you chosen quite possibly the one sports car that you'd have to pour lots of $ into. There are plenty of other cars for about the same price range that wont be as fast, but will be 90% as fast. A 200SX sor example (S13 SR20DET) would be a much better alternative. Even something like a Starlet GT will have you heaps of fun and are VERY cheap to run around.

You'll have plenty of time for Magnas when your 30, enjoy your youth and dont listen to all these old farts :D

Seriously, it all depends on what your after. If you'd be happy with a magna at your age, then definetly get one as it'll save you $ but you wont have much fun in it unless you spend abit on suspension etc

what are you studying at uni, drug dealing?

just buy a KE70 corolla and spend the rest of your money on beer, drugs and bad women.

I went through a process of elimination with imports a while ago and decided an R32 Skyline was the one i preferred (didn't like the look of S13 Nissans etc). I wanted an RB20 partly for the noise it made (love the sound of most sixes), and having driven a 3.5L Magna manual before, i was quite impressed both by its balls and the sound it made, so i have no complaints with the engine (unlike Commodores etc).

If i do buy a magna i won't be leaving it alone but it won't be anything extreme..

i swear i thought like this up until recently and my drive in the VN put all this magna speak in motion. if i was to buy a magna and then change cars in 4-5 years, would buying/making something like a quad throttle body big cam clio sport with crazy suspension et al make up for it?? :D

                maybe it'll wear off tomorrow..

to "enjoy being young" doesn't automatically mean burning money good after bad you know!

yeah thats sorta why i chose to buy a cordia - there's still a massive scope for improvement (in either performance or luxury) for whatever next car i get.

i believe once you buy a new car, you can never go back!!

Not that you should listen to someone who thinks SVX's, Phaetons, Citroen C6's and Renault Avantimes are the most underrated cars on the planet but here goes....

I would get a Camry V6 manual - the Gen 3 shape, while getting on in years, should be fine and a bargain and the Gen 4 is a lot sleeker - the Camry's run forever and very little goes wrong with them (I had a 4cyl auto Gen 3 for a couple of years and drove the living hell out of it and it would not die! even took it around Wakefield!) and in the V6 range and manual, is actually quite quick - a bit of a sleeper to be honest - you can leave them anywhere, no attention from the police "Officer, its a Camry, would I seriously try to outdrag a Diablo off the line...he was trying to show off to me, arrest him!" and they have great resale since families love them.

Build up a no claim bonus, then, at the end of uni, you have 50% NCB, the savings from the difference that you would have paid in insurance premiums, a car that you can sell for not much less than you bought it for and which you can, if you want, mod up a bit (swaybars, stiffer suspension - check out the US sites for what you can do).

Then you can go get a 200SX, BMW etc!

Better to have the spare cash at uni to enjoy the social life rather than have a nice car in the car park, worry about it being stolen and have no money left to go out in the evenings.

n15 puslar SSS for the win....

im 22, have had silvias and an ae86 when i was at uni, well i still am but they kill the drinking and going out budget, if you are earning over 300 a week, then its fine to get a R32 gtst but don't think of seeing much of that 300, now i have a old corona that is fine for a-b, and have the datsun for the project car....

but as the other guys, i am still doing the brooke at uni and having shit loads of fun etc, just really matters what job you have on the side, and how much cash you earn.... if you are earning 300-500 and still living with the folks then you'll be fine and get a skyline

if i didn't like working on cars etc, id get a N15 sss, good on petrol, cheap insurance, get up and go and are fun to drive, and don't have that nerdy/im old look
                            Nate

I think you just went through my exact reasoning for considering a Magna :D Except i wouldn't buy a Camry.. i dunno..my friends would have my head..

zpeed, no i don't earn 300 most weeks and don't really like the effort i'd have to put in both for uni and work to keep a skyline going by the sounds of that. what i was thinking was with the money i'd spend on the skyline each week i could save up either for the next car (and have something way better than i was thinking) or spend on making the magna less grandpa spec. my personal reasoning against a pulsar is somewhere above cheers for the advice.

Wouldn't mind driving something like this around:

a magna the same age as the pic above i dare say will be a lot cheaper than an N15 SSS pulsar due to the relative popularities & the supply of such cars.
