I guess that if you have a need for all the optional bits & pieces, then the value equation gets better; but I've never read anything that's said the current A3 is any better (apart from a few minor things like interior materials) than the current Golf.
The a3 sportback turbo quattro at 55K, includes AWD, the GTI doesn't. The next model up that does is the R32.

Apparently the R32 is slated to be under $60k this time, too.
I dunno why, I thought I read something (ie. in this thread) about the $55k A3 being FWD or something; putting that aside though, $15k is still a lot of difference when it's $40k vs $55k.
Soft roaders represent an excellent compromise between the needs of the hardcore 4x4 user and the convenience of a city hatchback. Its clear to see why they have become so popular in todays society.

        Forg:

Actually, just going back to your first comment re: ripoff extras. Yeah they are . A friend ordered a few options his GTi and they very pricey. I think HID headlight are around $1900 extra. Premium Audio with satnav $3000 extra. DSG is extra too $2300 ish. Leather seats come in at $3000.

Actually regarding the GTi. An interesting alternative is the Jetta Turbo DSG. It comes in at 39,990 with DSG standard, I good $2500 cheaper than the GTi

Yep I can confirm the extras are a rip off, those figures MZ21 mentioned are quite accurate. I ended up getting HID, sunroof, leather and metallic paint ($800ish) and tint on my GTI and got suckered into the interior/exterior protection package which totalled to approx $51k drive away.

Pricey, and it took me 8 months to get it but I still love the car!

keep in mind the a3 is as i previously said, awd and standard with hid & leather whereas these are options in the gti...

i guess my main query was whether the audi carried the same handling and sporting dynamics as the famous gti name given theyre based on the same chassis

I just looked up the Ausi website and it says that 2.0 TSFI quattro only comes as a 6 speed manual and with no leather, no HID (all optional).

DSG is only bundled with FWD and TSFI.

So, you are looking at a $7500 prices difference between a similarly specced
A3 TSFi DSG and a GOlf GTi DSG.

i reckon its a good idea, it will differentiate impreza and liberty and there is no room in the back of an impreza anyway
